Best Open House/Tour

Anonymous
Which schools have provided informative Open Houses/Tours? Also, when touring are tours conducted by parents or Admissions staff? Which schools have had overly crowded tours/open houses? Just trying to determine where applications may be down and which schools are providing great information and not just fluff? TIA

At the middle-school level the tours at the cathedral schools & Maret were really informative. Sidwell not so much.

Thanks for the post : ) Anyone with information regarding lower schools.

If possible, I get personal tours--much more insightful, no other parents grabbing attention, etc.

Woods Academy gave a good Montessori presentation.
Burgundy Farm was a '3 hour tour', with a less than impressive know-it-all parent, and snobby parent who called herself the open house organizer/parent or something.
Green Acres was good, except the tour guide kept us outside talking in sub-zero morning weather. Love the playgrounds, but burrrr.
Washington Waldorf was very informal, relaxed. I think I liked it best--very down to earth parents, not asking pretentious questions to impressive admins. (Just school was way too....natural...for my kid) Also, class sizes were fairly large.
Barrie has great campus, but too many transitions in pre-k & K in my opinion.

St. Patrick's & SSFS is next on my list.

Sidwell was crowded. We were split into smaller groups that were still kind of big. The tour was conducted by two current parents. The information provided was OK, not great. Beauvoir (by design) was a small group tour conducted by a current parent. The information provided by the parent and by the AD was excellent and quite informative. I thought everyone from Beauvoir was genuinely warm and welcoming. The GDS tour was by far the most intimate and informative.

Doubt that applications will be down for any of these schools.

Not to be mean, but you must be exhausted. That's a lot of schools. Good for you for the due diligence in finding a match for your child.

We have done a lot of tours over the past few years for our two kids. GDS is a one-on-one tour with a parent, then an interview with the AD. Potomac is a one-on-one tour and interview with an AD. Had a summer group tour at Holton a year ago, but a one-on-one tour and interview this year in the fall. Maret was 5 or 6 parent couples with the AD. Sidwell (a while ago) was is a largish group with a parent, then a one-on-one interview with the AD on a different day. Beauvoir is 5 or 6 parent couples with a parent guide, and then a group info session with the AD. All were informative and thorough. We haven't been to many open houses, but Holton's was impressive--and well attended.

The St. Patrick's tour my husband and I went on was great. Small (group size) tour with the director of nursery admissions. Felt very warm and friendly.

Sorry to hear about one of previous poster's experience at Burgundy. Most parents are not in the least snobby or know-it-all. We absolutely love the place.

Nice: Maret, St Patrick's, NPS

The best tour I've been on (and I have also toured the big 3, St. Patrick's, WIS, Lowell and Aidan) was at our local public elmentary in Georgetown. A very bright and personable student took us for a tour around the school and it was very insightful to get a view from a child's perspective.

At Holton, a 9th grader accompanied us on our tour with the AD. Her perspective was very helpful...and she was very poised and made a great impression.
