I'm newly pregnant. Currently 8 weeks along. I had an allergic reaction lastnight and broke out in hives. Without thinking, I swallowed 2 benadryl. The itching subsided a bit. Afterwards, I realized I probably shouldn't have taken the pills because of the baby. I hope I didn't hurt the baby. ![]() |
I think you're OK. Lots of people take all sorts of medications or drink alcohol (I sure did!) before knowing they're pregnant. But, call your OB to put your mind at ease. |
OP here. Thanks. This isn't my first pregnancy, but I still worry like a first time mom. I was considering calling my doctor's office, but if it isn't an "emergency", I'm charged a fee for speaking to one of the doctors on call. I've listened to the voicemail but I don't want to drop $50 to hear that everything is ok in a 15 second phone conversation. I have several nurses in my family but I'm waiting another few weeks to make the pregnancy public because I would prefer to not say anything so early. I feel better now than I did before. ![]() |
Honestly, isn't the $50 worth it for peace of mind? You shouldn't take advice like this from random people on a message board (no offense to the PP). One other option is to go to a pharmacy, show the pharmacist what you took, and ask whether that was okay. When I was breastfeeding I would ask the pharmacist at my CVS what was/wasn't safe, and she'd look it up for me. |
Op again. I actually talked to a CVS pharmacist right before this post. It should be ok. I'm very newly pregnant too. |
Benedryl is perfectly fine, per my OB. |
Benadryl is fine in pregnancy. Don't worry. |
My OB said that benadryl was ok. I've taken it at least 10 times during this pg. |
Your doctor's office charges $50 for a phone call? Holy crap! |
How about checking out WebMD?
Pretty reliable website. It isn't a substitute for your own doc., but at least it is credible medical advice. I'm sure you'll be fine. Get back to us...(for future reference for other moms-to-be in the same boat ![]() |
My OB actually recommended benadryl as a sleep aid. I think you can rest easy, so to speak. |
I had really bad itching and was prescribed benadryl by my OB. I was further along than you (third trimester), but it was explained by the dr and then confirmed by a pharmasist that it's perfectly ok in pregnancy. Good luck. |
I got stung by a bee at 7 weeks and my OB said it was ok to pop an antihistamine. |
