My son currently goes to Sherwood Elementary and his brother will attend in a few years. They will then move on to William Farquhar middle. I have been told that these are both great schools. We are considering moving, which would change them to Sequoyah Elementary, Redland middle, and Magruder High. I don't know much about the latter two schools and everyone I ask doesn't seem to have much to offer. I was wondering if anyone had any input? It would be greatly appreciated |
same feeder as your kids -from SES to Farquhar Our feeders to Sherwood are solid schools - good community support. Sequoia is a good school, but it's having some transitional issues b/c of rezoning. I don't think the community is used to an increase in FARMs. It's difficult to rezone in our cluster, as there's nothing much else around. A tiny part of Farquhar is in the NEC, and they complain about not having Sherwood High as their home school. Years ago, Sherwood opted out of the NEC, which was a wise move in my opinion. You could check schools at a glance. Many rely on it b/c it includes data. So people can compare. There's a big difference in dropout rates , for example, and with FARMs numbers. Thanks, that's really helpful! I didn't realize Sequoyah had been rezoned, when did that happen? |
DCs did not go to Sequoyah but live nearby. Have heard that even though the test scores are not stellar that the school has a lot of great programs due to the rezoning (busing in from G-burg) and that the PTA is very active. Basically have heard very good things from folks that go there. I think Redland as a MS has better test scores than Sequoyah as ES since since the other feeder elementary schools are very good. Probably not a good as Farquhar but very decent. Sherwood is better than Magruder but not that significantly. Okay, these are all IMHO but have lived in the area 40 years and hear from lots of parents from all school. Either way, I think you cannot go wrong. |
I have a DS who went to Redland MS and is currently a 9th grader in Magruder HS and have two younger children currently at Redland. We had great fears about both schools based on all the "horror" stories going around. Redland MS under Principal Sinclair (who is in his 4th year there) has been solid. The teachers and counselor's have (by in large) been great and very responsive. You will get a hiccup once in a while, but you will get that at any school. Really no complaints at all about Redland. My DS at Magruder really likes it. He is in a couple of Honors classes and a couple of regular classes. No complaints about either. We did have an issue with a counselor early on and brought it to the attention of the administration and they were quick to address it (and have followed up with me). The teachers are quick to respond to emails and provide feedback if requested. Again, he is only in 9th grade but so far, so good..... |
I don't recall, but it was unbalanced, as that part of Derwood attracts some big money. Friend's children all attend Sequoia. She loves it. no complaints despite some transitional issues |
What are these "transitional issues" people are talking about? |
