An admittedly unpopular opinion: I think Usha looks great here. (OK, except for the shoes.)

No I agree! I like the blue and white stripes on her. I don't even really have a problem with the loafers. I think ballet flats or sandals would look better but whatevs.

I'm sorry but this is a terrible outfit - those shoes are so unflattering, the shirt is too tight and looks absurd with that flitty skirt. And her hair looks terrible.

Agreed. Next time can we request JD takes Ivanka with him? She knows how to dress the part! Usha could have borrowed her outfit from the Ambani wedding?!

At risk of sounding like a clueless white woman, I wonder why she didn't choose to wear more Indian outfits? When she stepped off the plane in Solani (Indian-British designer) I was hopeful she would lean into theme dressing for the week. Even in that pic, she's dressed like the world's most mediocre midlevel bank manager and the interviewer is in a sari, so a sari wouldn't have been inappropriate.

I'm Indian-American and I am right there with you!! And the crazy thing is that they've been dressing their children in Indian clothes. They are far better dressed than her. She doesn't even need to be in a sari, she could wear something like her daughter is wearing (except obviously a longer top).

It's very deliberate. Other than the occasional Indian designer, she doesn't wear anything that calls back to India at all.

I'd assume that this is to appease or keep the ultra right wing quiet. You can't be anti-DEI and have your wife out frolicking in a sari and celebrating her heritage.

Oh 100% it’s deliberate, right wing would have lost their minds if she represented U.S in Indian clothing, though they wouldn’t be too wrong on this one. At the end of the day she is representing the U.S and she is trying to stick to the clothing protocol of U.S.

But that doesn't apply to the children?

Also, I'm sorry, but white ladies Cosplay in the clothes of the country they're visiting all the time. This is actually her parents' country, she absolutely should dress in Indian clothes to respect her heritage and her hosts.

Oh, please. If Modi and his wife were visiting the US, they would be wearing their Indian garb. They wouldn’t cosplay westerners just because they were visiting a western country. Usha is an American and is dressing as one. Get over it.

You really would have no desire to put on beautiful Indian clothes if you were in India? I sure would!!

Maybe. But then there are always the killjoys who consider that "cultural appropriation." Of course, for Usha Vance, it wouldn't be, but still - it's her choice.

Re: Celebrating her heritage.

A clip of that interview came up on my Instagram last night. I was shocked to learn this is JD's first time in India. Haven't they been married for like 10, closer to 15 years? And in that whole time they've never been to India together? She did say they read the kids Indian epics and JD sometimes makes Indian food, but idk. I don't think she's loud and proud about her heritage.

I've been married 15 years and my husband and I have never been to India together. My parents and their entire families live in the US. If your parents moved from Wichita to New England, and your grandparents were all dead would you have reason to go back to Wichita??

Except she has relatives in India - apparently her grandmother didn’t know she was going to be there until govt officials showed up at her house. Is she estranged from her family? I haven’t seen her side at anything, parents included

I would not at ALL be surprised if she was estranged from her family over being part of the Trump Administration - her parents are college professors in California!! I mean this is her mom, Professor Chill. Come on, she looks so cool!

https://www.instagram.com/p/C12XE8EPSXy/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=e03fddd9-659d-44c9-bc4a-c456c4330c30

There is an entire reddit thread about her mom on the UCSB subreddit and the rumors are that Usha's parents have a strained relationship with JD

I would assume so - she promotes DEI at UCSD and her work is described as describing the “history of use and misuse of science in biomedical research and social policy” so I’m sure she's thrilled with RFK jr. JD’s book mentioned how close Usha’s family was the first time he met them, including genuinely liking her grandmother.

I think the whole “she’s too American to wear Indian dress” is odd. I have many second generation Indian friends and they all own and wear Saris or Lehengas to weddings/parties/etc. JD wore a Kurta at their wedding, so at some point I assume she embraced her culture.

JD in his wedding pics looks like a sleep paralysis demon.

It's not an unpopular opinion. Normal people agree that she looks great. I'd love that dress for summer.

Looks like she's gained weight. Maybe trying to hide it with her coat?

The woman is slim as always.

Hey Mel! Sup girl?!

I'm not the poster who said she is slim as always but I do think she looks good in the top photo. In the bottom two you can see how harsh her spray tan is. And I don't think she looks like she was packing on the pounds as another poster said.

Also what is up with the intense spray tan lately. If she were half a shade darker I'd be worried she was attempting blackface.

You can see in the top photo that she looks normal. So the other photos were clearly not lit well or shadowed.

Well, no. The top photo is from far away. The bottom two are up close. And, again, a week ago she gave an award with the same intense spray tan she has in the bottom two pics. So let's use our logic here.

Look, I said she is still slim and I think she looks good. I said her spray tan is harsh. You need to get a grip.

Who wears a leather trench coat to a family/children’s event? Why always a coat?

Why is anyone comparing Usha to Kate M? Makes no sense. Kate is a future queen; she has been a princess for a long time. She has designers who love to dress her. She has he personal assistant for her clothes and fashion who works like there are 60 hours in one day.
I doubt that Usha had that in her life, and she will never have it.
There is a huge difference of being a Vice President's wife and being a future Queen of one of the most powerful empires in the world in the past that has vast wealth still.
Usha is a regular woman who suddenly became the wife of the vice president.

I'm of the opinion that Vance would be really pissed if Usha upstaged him because of her clothing like Jackie K. did with Kennedy.
Little American wifey is exactly what he wants so no ethnic clothes for her.

I think she looks nice here, gd help us. But whoever said the daughter's outfit is better is correct.

The loafers are not good. Why not a pair of simple ballet flats?

If she had worn ballet flats, you would have mocked her for wearing them and insisted that white loafers would have been better.

White loafers would never be better. Not those, not on her.

I don't think that's quite the same. Moving from Wichita to New England is still American culture, albeit with regional differences.

The dress was nice and ballet flats would have easy and completed the picture. The white loafers are terrible.
It’s like the time she wear that terrible taupe sweater with the army green winter coats to Greenland. A simple black turtleneck would have been so much better
