Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| I have to make an emergent trip to NYC in the am, sick family member, I am taking my 2 1/2 month old son and we are taking the train. I will have to take a taxi from the train station to the hospital; do people bring car seats to put in the cabs or just ride in the cab with child in lap? |
|
CAR SEAT - I would never drive in my car with my baby on my lap ... taxi is no different. I realize it's a pain, but if something happened you would never forgive yourself.
I'm sorry to hear about your family member being so ill. Best of luck |
| Do you really think that parents that live in NYC and only get around by taxi and subway and walking lug a carseat with them wherever they go? I would love to hear from a real New Yorker.....I am curious. We visited NYC and Paris with our 2 y.o a few years ago and took cabs. I agree, it is no different than getting into any car with your child on your lap - but I just wonder what people in NYC do - and what the actual law says. |
| If you have a snap n go, that is your best bet. Its great bc maybe the baby will sleep on the train and it can sleep in the car seat and its small and easy to bring with you. IF you dont have one, maybe you can borrow one for a few days. We once took our 3 m.o. in a cab in the bjorn, but only bc it was an emergency. |
| Wear the baby in a carrier (Bjorn , Ergo, Moby, etc.) and seat belt the both of you in. |

I think the above recommendation is very dangerous. The baby will be squeezed between you and the shoulder strap in an accident. And the carriers are not rated to hold a baby in crash situations.
You have a 2 1/2 month old, and so you are going to want the pumpkin seat anyway. Just buckle it in. There is a way to easily strap it in with any car seat. |
| but why in the plane we're not allowed to buckle the baby on our lap? |
The airline allows passengers to do that, but any safety expert will tell you to buy an extra seat and buckle your baby in the carseat. |
|
PP, the baby would get squished between you and the seat belt. You would exert more than one ton of pressure on the baby in a crash, and she would be pinned between you and the seat belt. The same is true of a car.
Holding the baby in your arms is also not safe. You do not have the strength to hold onto a baby in a car crash. If you work out the physics, it is nearly to surely impossible, depending on the severity of the crash. |
| What kind of car seat do you have? I have the britax companion and it can be belted into the car without a base. I have to do the same thing next week - take a taxi home from the airport. I was assuming that was fine. |

Car seat laws vary by state. I believe in VA you don't need to have one in a taxi, but in Maryland you do. I've taken my infant seat in cabs before and belted them in easily and quickly. I just practiced first at home a bit.
I know it's a pain to lug it, but that's the definition of having an infant, isn't it? It took me three times as long to go anywhere when my son was first born. Now that he's a toddler, it only takes twice as long.

| Op here, thanks for the advice. I took the carseat (snugride) and snap and go and just belted the seat into the cabs. It was a lot to get on and off the train by myself but it was easy once we were off. |
I'm glad it went well.
