Our book club needs something good to read. A recent fiction novel that isn't too pop culture (to satisfy the English Lit majors in our group), but that also has a compelling enough plot to keep the more lowbrow folks reading too.
What book or author do you recommend? |
Jhumpa Lahiri's The Lowland was just nominated for the National Book Award. I'm a snobby English major who also reads lowbrow selections and I loved The Namesake. I haven't read this new one but I bet it'll fit the bill. |
I have good luck with writers nominees and winners from this group:

Why not read the latest Booker Prize winner?:

I just finished The Orchardist and it was lovely. Recommended by NPR. It's sad and moving but also interesting and well written I think. |
The author of The Kite Runner? |
Ooooh, I'd not seen that list before. I loved both The Lacuna and Bel Canto, the only two of those I've read. I'll have to keep the list handy and check out some others. |

I second Jumpha Lahiri. She is the writer of our generation
|
Maggie O'Farrell |
I enjoyed her book of short stories. |
Agree. Check out Rachel Kushner too. |
I just read The Orphan Master's Son and loved it. It would be a great bookclub book. |
Lahiri isn't new but I agree that she's sensational. |
She's not new, but she has a new book out. OP asked for new books or authors. |
