What/who is the best new literary fiction book/writer?

I'm reading The Signature of all Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. It's amazingly well written and an engaging story - great for a book club.

I just read "You Are One of Us" by Elliott Holt. I think it would be a good book club book. It's about two young girls, one of whom goes to Russia and disappears. A lot of it's set in DC.

Is there anything out there that doesn't include rape, incest, murders, torture, dead children, or dwarves knitting in an unheated attic? I'm so sick of all the darkness. Not that I want vampires or zombies, but something a bit humorous or lighthearted would be so great!!

I agree. I have been reduced to reading The Outlander series just to have something "light". Even then it's pretty brutal.

"Where'd You Go Bernadette" is fantastic! I wouldn't say it's lighthearted necessarily, but it's not sad and depressing. I zipped through it. Loved it.

Loved the husband's secret by Lianne Moriarty, as PP mentioned. Reading Sisterland now but I think I'm in the minority and am not enjoying it.

I just finished Dave Eggers' 'The Circle' and thought it was terrific. The New York Times magazine published a long excerpt as its cover story last month -- that is a very rare honor for a work of fiction.

The Last Runaway by Traci Chevalier.
