Are any government agencies actually hiring attorneys, or should I stop wasting time applying?

Anyone out there a government attorney?

If so, do you know if any agencies are actually hiring? I've submitted about forty applications in the past year and have only gotten two interviews. I'm wondering if most of these postings aren't real, given budget constraints.

Also, any tips for how to get a position would be much appreciated.

Va is hiring a hundred plus. Cfpb is ridiculously competitive. Justice and IRS often go through big hiring binges. But a lot is in flux with the sequester and shutdown. In general it is competitive.

Now is just not a good time to be looking with the sequester. Agencies are not filling vacant positions. We lost over 30 people in my section of Justice over the past three years. We hired 5.

Look at agencies that have their own source of funding that is a cash cow.

I was looking this time last year and several jobs i applied or interviewed for were later closed and not filled, I'm sure due to budget reasons. Best way to get noticed is to know someone. It's not necessary but really helps get your resume a closer look.

This is so depressing.

So are people overworked now? Or were things slow before?

My agency has hired a ton of new attorneys over the past few months. Many of them are entry level that were interns the previous summer and a few are laterals with specialized experience.

Same at my agency on a much smaller scale. We lost 3 from an office of 12 over the past 3 years, including the deputy. Haven't filled any of them and don't plan to. That is in addition to the 2 spots that we never filled from about 10 years back; I think those are probably officially gone now. The thing is, though, we don't really need those spots, so it isn't that bad. The old-timers moan about how overworked we are but I don't see it. The rest of the agency has much more work than my small office and so they are getting the funding for the spots -- as they should. I think it is much worse at larger places like Justice or HHS or HUD that are just swamped all the time. I hate to give credence to the government/fed haters, but we really do have some dead weight at my agency that would be good to trim. And the only way to do it is through retirement and attrition because their work is adequate, just not great.

In any event, OP, if you are seeing advertisements, you might as well apply. Can't hurt to try. My guess is that the vacancy announcements are way down from where they were a year ago but maybe they will pick up in a few months after the budget issues are worked out.

How old are you? The not-so-secret secret is that the age discrimination is rampant with federal agencies. The inmates run the asylum in this administration, and you'd better not be over 40 if you're looking for an agency job, unless you're an appointee.

What? Absolutely not true in my section of the DOJ -- all of the higher level attorneys we've hired in the past 5 years have been 40 or older. By "higher level" I mean those coming in as GS 14/15 . . .

Op here.
I meant to ask in my initial posting, which agencies are or are not hiring, if people feel comfortable saying the name?
Thanks.
