Like or dislike teacher

So far, do you like/dislike your DC's teacher and why?

I'll go first. At this point in time, though I am hopeful it will change, I'm not too excited about my DS's teacher. I've seen her literally switch personality hats based on parents being in the classroom. She comes across as very insincere. Again, I'm hopeful.

Memories of my sixth grade teacher who was nasty. She would be reaming us out like a witch, but let another teacher or principal walk in, she was "charming". Years later, I can still see the switch.

What makes any parent like or dislike a teacher? As a parent, I am rarely in the class to see the teacher in action. I do my part by supplying supplies when needed, give donations, help at parties, etc but I can't base those things on liking her or not. My son is doing great in school so I guess I like her... Such a weird thing when people ask if I like my child's teacher. Ask my son and he will say yes so great!

Dislike, but keeping hope. We are respectful toward her and only say positive things in front of our child, but I am counting the days until the school year is over. I think she'd be much happier teaching at an all-female school because she's fabulous with the girls.

Oh honey please. One year your son will have a crappy teacher and believe me you will have an opinion. Count your blessings, but no need to be arrogant.

I like her. DD had her for fourth grade also, and we are pleased as punch with her. I was a little worried that 5th grade would be a repeat of 4th what with a 4/5 split and the same teacher, but it's all different stuff this year.

One thing that I think makes DD's teacher great is that she had a different career before teaching. So she really knows how to be a ballbuster and can speak to adults.

If I had to complain about something I would say she is too easy on DD. DD is very good at endearing herself to adults and uses that to get away with things. I wish she'd lay the smack down a little harder. But overall she is wonderful and if I were invited to move DD to another teacher I wouldn't.

What makes a parent dislike a teacher?

1. Multi-phase projects assigned on May 25th requiring materials not commonly stored in my household. Since my elementary schooler doesn't drive, my husband or I have to fit in a trip to the dollar store/craft store/thrift store for some "necessary" item like feathers, fabric glue, or popsicle sticks.

2. Projects requiring costuming. (Bonus dislike teacher points if the project is assigned in May)

3. Not answering the one email that I send in an entire year.

4. Randomly choosing one child's written work for the grade in a group project. If your kid gets saddled with the rebel who doesn't do any work, your kid gets a zero if the teacher chooses the rebel's paper from the pile for the group's grade.

Mixed. I like her academic precision. My son is learning a lot. She is not a fan of boys, though, and that's been a little rough. But it's manageable.

Horrible what school? I've dealt with 1-3 but 4 takes the cake.

I have had some crappy teachers but really, that's life. You will also at some point have crappy bosses. Deal with it.

This thread is about whether you dislike or like your child's teacher and why. We did not ask for your words of (not) wisdom. If you don't want to play, that's fine. but please take your toys and play elsewhere. Go start a thread called "crappy teachers-suck it up."

Carry on folks...

I never figured out the point of disliking a teacher. Not like you are going to change anything.

another insensitive teacher:
grouping your middle school kid on an outside project with kids who live 20 minutes from your house.

I really didn't like my son's first grade teacher. At all. The thing is, in retrospect, she got him reading. It was a painful year, but a successful year and a lot of that was because of her. Hard to like "painful" but her job is teaching.

So, I don't look back on her with warm fuzzier, but with a great deal of respect and that is fine.

Experience told me to be less judgemental of the teachers. And to keep my mouth shut.

"Change" is not what liking or disliking someone is about.
