| I used to love watching scary movies as a preteen and teen; but I wasn't watching Halloween and Friday the 13th at that age, more like the old 60s ones that were creepy but not violent and slasher-like. I am trying to get a handle on what would be good ones to start my kids out with that wouldn't be gratuitously violent. Ideas? |
| Not in less you know and ok it with the parents. |
Not in less? What?? Areyou trying to say "unless"? Ok it with what parents? I'M the parent. I'm not talking about showing movies to other kids. |

What ages? My kids loved the Halloweentown movies when they were mid-elementary school.
Also you could go with Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy, etc., if they would enjoy a B&W movie. |
| Some of the old Edgar Allen Poe movies with Vincent Price were great. |
| How old are your kids, OP? That matters a lot. |
| The Shaggy Dog (old Disney version) is kind of scary but funny, and not gory. Night at the Museum is a bit scary but also fun. |
| Also, check out www.commonsensemedia.org for lots of movie recommendations. |
| Sorry. By preteens I meant 11 and 12. Just before the teen years, in other words. |
|
My older preteens/younger teens absolutely loved being scared by Wait Until Dark, a brilliant old Audrey Hepburn movie about a blind housewife.

Paranorman
It.s really underrated and is just the right combination of scary and thoughtful. |

Girl vs Monster (maybe not scary enough for want you want)
Something Wicked This Way Comes Also suggest checking commonsense media website. They have a section on horror movies and it breaks down the details to help you decide what you want, or want to avoid, for your particualr kids. |

Pee Wee's big Adventure has the scary part with Large Marge that is over quickly.
I can't believe I just remembered that. |
NP here -- thanks for this fabulous suggestion! |
