are there any homeschoolers in northern virginia who would be willing to provide some insight on what the process involves? how many children do you have at home? what are their ages? what are the resources you use? what are the challenges? do you plan to put your kids back in school eventually?

I am in MD, but what are their ages? Have you decided what curriculum you're going to use?
Re-entering is no big deal if you keep the kids active with after school activities such as brownies.

PP again, OP take a look at homeschoolreviews, a web site that can give you info about curricula. Some of the curricula that are popular are not necessarily the best. You have to do a lot of research. There are also some creative ways to make a curriculum. It can be fun. Good luck.
