Metformin side effects question

Anonymous
Has anyone who takes metformin had a side effect where they are really thirsty and have a bad taste in their mouth? Like almost a chalky taste? I started on 500 mg and was fine and since I have added to 1000 mg a day I am experiencing this

I'm interested in hearing the responses. My doctor has been pushing this medicine for
a while and I finally agreed to try it. I just got it filled tonight. I've read that is causes some pretty
bad stomach issues. OP- have you experienced that? Thanks!

I have been on it for years. For fertility initially and now I just feel better if i take at least one a day. I definitely noticed a different taste, though not chalky. Stomach issues for me were dissapated by ramping up the doses slowly. Never noticed excessive thirst. No issues now. I have been on it since before my 9-year-old DD was conceived. It really made a difference for fertility. Three pregnancies, two children thanks to metformin.

Op here. At 500 mg I felt zero side effects. A lot of people
Say bad stomach problems but I experienced none. I've been on the higher dose for a week and am now experiencing thirst and a weird taste in my mouth. I also have less of an appetite. I'm taking it to hopefully regulate ovulation because I have PCOS and am TTC

Metformin is prescribed for fertility??! I had absolutely no idea. OMG.

My Dr. prescribed it for me to lose weight, and I ended up getting pregnant on it at 44. <---- Long Story.
I wonder if that had anything to do w/it.....Hmmm.....

Anyway, I did drop 10 lbs. though.

Yes, Metformin can help people with polycystic ovaries (PCOS) ovulate and therefore get pregnant. Worked for me.

See if your doctor will prescribe extended release metformin (it's also generic) or try the brand Glumetza. I transitioned from Glumetza to the extended release without any issues.

PP who has been on it for years. When I was TTC I took 500mg 3X per day. I ramped up the doses slowly over several weeks to avoid the stomach trouble. One a day for a few weeks, then added one every other day for a few weeks, etc, until I was up to the full dose. When it was first prescribed to me, my OB would not prescribe the XL version because it had not been shown to work for fertility, though intuitively it seems like it would. Don't know if that protocol has changed. Might be worth investigating if you are still having trouble.

Oh my! I bet that was a shocker

Did you lose weight quickly? I have pcos and it's so hard to lose weight, even with diet and excercise. The only thing that remotely works is no sugar or carbs, not even fruit. My prescribed metformin to help with weight loss. I have so many stomach issues and have been hesitant to start it.
