Has anyone NOT had a good experience as a result of previa?

Anonymous
I just got diagnosed with previa during my nuchal translucency test at 12 weeks. I did a search on DCUM and see that many women have had previa, and it worked out fine for everyone who posted.

But I'm wondering if there's anyone out there for whom previa caused serious problems? Is it possible for it to result in very preterm birth, for example? I'm at risk for that already with incompetent cervix.

Thanks --

I would be more concerned with the incomplete cervix. I hope you are seeing a high risk doc, if not, go find one. I h ad previa, bed rest from week 26. Everything worked out fine. I had a great doc. good luck

Since you got diagnosed so early, there's an excellent chance that the placenta will move up. I don't remember the statistic exactly, but it's something like 90%. I agree with PP, at this point I would be more concerned about the incompetent cervix. Best of luck to you!

Ditto on the previa vs. incompetent cervix. I would try to find a doctor that will do a cerclage, as well as a high risk peri asap. You're still early for previa, which can change.

I'm not sure what your definition would be, but I was diagnosed at 7 months with full previa. (I don't know why so late, but not the point, huh???) I was told to "take it easy", not put on bed rest, but told to lighten my load at work as I work in the hotel industry. I was told to schedule a C section two weeks prior to my due date as vaginal birth would not be permitted if the previa didn't correct. I did have the impression the doc did not think full previa would correct. At eight months I woke up at 4am cursing myself I was now peeing the bed. The scary part was not that I peed the bed, but that I was bleeding. I quickly called the doctor, went to sibley and had an emergency C at eight months. DS was fine, no distress during childbirth, etc. Because he was eight months, he was in NICU for two days, slightly elevator blood sugar. All was absolutely super duper fine. I, too, have read the same info about previa correcting itself...in the majority of cases.

Again, all was fine for me.

ditto pp's on making sure the ic problem is dealt with first.

how bad is your previa? i had partial previa and was told that it usually resolves itself by 20 weeks or so. for me, it did.

good luck.

"I just got diagnosed with previa during my nuchal translucency test at 12 weeks"

You many want to talk with your doctor again. The placental positions shifts overtime and it is very common to see previa at 12 weeks. In many cases this corrects and moves before the third trimester. I also did the nuchal and my peri (I was high risk for preeclampsie/HELLP..previa not a great additional complication with HELLP since HELLP affects blood clotting so we were freaked out too.) and it looked like previa. She said not to worry and it often corrects. At 20 weeks it had moved up.

There is also partial and complete which I believe carry different risks. If you do have previa at the end of term, you can't deliver vaginally. The risk is hemoraging at birth and preterm. If you have an incompetent cervix and previa you definetely want to go to a MFM or peri not a generalist ob/gyn. Georgetown, INOVA fairfax and I think Shady Grove have good MFM practices that will see you as a primary rather than a secondary consult to your generalisy ob/gyn.

OP here. Thanks for the responses and reassurances. It seems clear that I have an excellent change of having the previa resolve in time for birth. Problem is that I am, in fact, having a cerclage. I hate the idea of the placenta sitting right on top of my cervix while it's being sewn up. My peri says that the cerclage is really necessary so I'm going ahead with it. And hoping that it doesn't cause too much bleeding.
