Is long hair "unprofessional"?

Anonymous
I am 37, in a fairly high position at work.... I have long hair, but I feel like it would be more "work-appropriate" if I got a cute long bob or something. I'm starting a at a new company soon and feel like I might be more respected or at least look more professional if I had a different cut. My hairdresser loves long hair and always discourages me when I ask for a bob - she feels that my hair looks good long & that I should keep it that way since I'm still young enough.

What do you think? Would a stylish bob be more work-appropriate than long, layered hair??? Is long hair too "young" for me at 37??? Appointment today - quick answers appreciated!

I believe you should cut off enough for it to not be considered long. Maybe shoulder length or slightly longer if you're comfortable with that.

You're in a high position, so long hair has not kept you back. Your stylist likes it so it is obviously not ratty. There will come a time when you can't have it, period. Like after 50 or so. So keep it for now.

It's ridiculous that long hair on a woman should be associated with unprofessional.

Michelle Duggar long= a problem. Maria Shriver long= prob ok, if you have constant upkeep.

Agree - Maria Shriver is a good barometer.

Maybe get a long bob? Shoulder length?

It's easy enough to fake shorter hair that a drastic trim is unwarranted unless you really want to lose the length. Get yourself a couple of hair donuts (use a matching thread to shape one into a more cylindrical form), lots of hair pins (spin pins rock!) and then find yourself some tutorials on Sock buns, Gibson tucks, Gibson rolls and fake bobs.

Depends. Visit the Corporette archives for various threads on this topic:

FWIW, my hair comes an inch or two above my bra strap.

I have long hair and am 38. When I am at work, I generally pull it back or put it up.

Agreed. It is only unprofessional if it makes you look unkempt. But that can be said about any hair length.

Wow, this would be really fun to do every single morning while getting ready work. I'm looking for ways to add time to my morning routine, so I can get even less sleep. You delivered!
