What cell phone does your 12 year old have?

Interested specifically in this tween, middle school age. Wondering if most who have phones actually have an iPhone or other smart phone.

Non-smart phone -- I think it's a Samsung Evergreen or something like that, with a slide out keyboard and texting but no internet.

iPhone 4S.

He has a t-mobile prepay with $100 minutes - that is enough for a year. He has no data plan, but does have a smart phone and can get wireless wherever it is available.

We have verizon and it is just too expensive (not to mention overkill) for him to be on our plan.

I have a 13 year old and an 11 year old (and other younger children, but since this thread asked for 12 year old, I consider those two the most relevant).

13 year old has a phone similar to what 20:32 described...non smart phone with a slide out keyboard and text but no internet. I honestly couldn't even tell you what brand/model it is. It's whatever we could get free with our plan.

11 year old doesn't have one yet. The plan was to get him something similar to what the 13 year old has, but we would like to change plans soon and don't want to have to commit to a 2 year contract.

It's some kind of crazy when an 11 or 12 yr. old has a $500 phone! I, at the age of 44, have an LG840g -- which cost $9.99 and $99 for a year of service. It allows me to make calls and text. Doesn't do internet. I don't need it. I expect to pass this on to my DD in a few years when she is 12-ish. IMO, it's perfect for a kid's first phone b/c it allows them to phone home and to text their friends. Nothing more -- and no $70/mo. bill. Also, no worries that the kid will lose an expensive item. (It's also perfect for people like me who don't get a phone paid by employer and who don't want to drop $900/year on service/data).

Funny that you think my kid shouldn't have an iPhone 5 because you can't afford one.

Oh I can afford one. I just don't think it's sane to give a $500 phone to a 12 yr. old. Over-indulgence is a form of abuse according to some experts.
