SAHD wondering about job interview

Anonymous
I am a SAHD who has a phone interview in a few days. I have a three month old that I care for during the day while my wife is at her full-time job. I was recently tapped for a full-time office job, and have a phone interview scheduled in a few days. I do not know what the salary is, and this is a major factor because we would have to hire a nanny/find daycare if I go back to work. If the salary is only enough to pay for childcare, I'm wouldn't take it. I am not sure, however, if I should ask about pay during the initial interview. I know that salary negotiations are normally reserved for later, but could I at least ask what the salary range is in this first interview? I am afraid of bringing it up at all since that is not proper interview etiquette. If anyone has been in a similar situation, I would appreciate any advice.

You can't bring it up yet. You just have to suck it up and invest the energy in the interview(s) and pull out if the offer (after negotiations) is not sufficient. Good luck.

I don't agree with the PP. You can definitely bring it up over the phone. I have had at least 3 interviews in the past month and i have always asked about the salary range before actually going to the on-site interview. Usually at the end of the phone interview, they will ask you if you have any questions, so start asking about the company's culture, the team and then end with salary range. They gladly respond and don't hold it against you and usually you're talking to an internal recruiter or HR coordinator so they know this info is needed and have it handy most of the times
