That's what happens when a state stops funding its universities. That was the rate when I attended in the late 1980s. The legislature subsequently passed a law that the out of state rate could not exceed 30%. I guess they repealed it. Good for Michigan, bad for Michiganders.

Which rate are we talking about? The % of OOS accepted to Michigan or the % of OOS students enrolled at Michigan?

It's a little different than a school like UVA though because it's so much larger. So more opportunity for Michiganders to attend. I personally think that geographic diversity is a good thing in state schools.

My kid is applying there. It's the second most popular school for applications at our MD high school after UMD.

I know a number who have gotten merit aid, most in the $10k range.

what's the acceptance rate for students around here?

does pretty much everyone who applies get in as long as they are reasonably competitive?

Or is it a crapshoot/lottery like the ivies are for kids who are right at the 50th-75 percentile in terms of grades and scores?

I'm curious about stats for OOS students vs in state. Is it easier admissions from OOS than in state?

Easier from the DC area from a solid high school, and in the top third of the class, I'd say. Plenty of areas in Michigan are w/out such advanced academics which means it's very difficult for those kids to get in. And wealthy/educated areas, of course, all want to go to UM so competition is fierce.

"DC area" refers to DC privates, lower MoCo publics and near in Fairfax publics - the remainder of the "DC area" does NOT have better public schools than most of Michigan. Trust me there are not a lot of DC public school grads going to Michigan.

Yup, crazy, that's why Virginians are so mad. Our stats are much much worse than Michigan's. We can't get into our own universities which we've paid for, especially if you are applying from NoVA.

The public funding for UVA quite low - 6% of the budget based on a couple of sources. One of the reasons they seek OOS students is the higher tuition dollars so that the VA residents can continue to enjoy low tuition rates.

Well Michigan has an undergraduate population of 28,000 students whereas the entire state has about 9.8 million. UVA has 14,000 undergraduates, but the state of Virginia has a population of 8.1 million. So it makes sense to me that there would be twice as many slots for out of staters--the state is not even close to twice as populated as Virginia even though the flagship state school has twice as many students.
