My daughter (14) is already ahead of herself and looking at camps for next summer. She found a camp called Calleva. I looked at the website, and it looks good for activities. But, I was wondering if the activities are safe (kayaking, rafting etc) and what the overnights are like. I understand this is early, but what are your experiences with Calleva?
(sorry, posted this in the wrong forum before) |
| My 8 year old attended Calleva this past summer. It's one of the top camps in our area. The activities were safe. My daughter did the kayaking with wet exits (google this). They take a boat of some sort to an island once a week. They go to a farm, an outdoor location, and then the island. It's all outdoors. Well, the farm does have an indoor rock climbing wall and some indoor horses. I went up during a clean up day in April. It was absolutely breathtaking. My standards are high and I had no problems or concerns. The kids take buses from DC to the camp. I found it very organized and safe. I don't know about the overnights, but I wouldn't worry. I heard they started with like 10 kids like 20 years ago and it's grown to like 600 or something. You will be pleased. |
| Does this camp book up early? I'd like to go to their open house in the spring. Thanks. |
| My DS and many of his friends did this camp last summer. They had a great time and want to go back next summer. |
Yes, it books very quickly. Don't wait until the open house. |
. Thanks! Is this camp mostly suited for outdoorsy sports types? I have one who prefers arts and reading, loves the indoors -- but this might be so fun and different. Thanks for your advice. |

It is really great and probably the best "day" camp around for the older kids. My tweens/teens won't go anywhere else. While the camp is great the counselors are even better. I have one who each year swears he won't do the overnight. Each year the counselors convince him to do it and he has a blast. There is something about having some random college kid encouraging you that works better than a mom. We are at the stage now where they have "reunion" weeks where the kids from previous years all do the same activity the same week. Not everyone makes it but it is something mine really look forward to.
It does book up early so you will want to jump on it when registration opens for new campers. You may have to be more flexible with weeks/activities. Certain ones like Adventure Island book quickly. But others like fishing (which my DD actually loves-- she is my artsy one so this is as adventurous as she gets) tend to have lots of openings. My DS has done the rafting camp for years now. Frankly he is non-sporty but loves it. They have lots of water fights, sign songs, float down rivers and just have a blast. |
| How quickly does it fill up for new campers for the 7 year old general camp? Is it hours within hours or days of the new camper registration opening? Thanks! |
| I'm thinking about signing my 11 year old son up for 9 weeks to get the discount (and have the continuity) -- for those of you who have done Calleva, do your kids mix and match between activities, or do you tend to repeat weeks to develop skills and/or hang out with the same set of kids? |
| I would mix and match..I don't think it is really designed for multiple repeats. I think the mix of kids changes alot from week to week too. My kids love the camp though.. They usually go for a 2-3 weeks. I don't think they have every chosen to repeat an activity in the same summer though. |
My DS is definitely outdoorsy and loved calleva but 9 straight weeks might be a bit much. It's pretty exhausting compared to other camps, even sports camps. You might want to mix it up a bit. If you do all calleva mix high energy activities with less strenuous ones (so a week of rock climbing followed by a week of fishing). Also not a lot of continuity with people, except maybe on the bus. The activities really go off in different directions. |
| Thanks, that's very helpful! |
| What is the overnight (Thursday) like? |
If you want continuity of kids and activities, you might want to look at valley mill, which has longer sessions. |

Does anyone know what the bus schedule was in past years for upper NW?
We are trying to figure out if we can make it work and if bus drop off is at 4:15 - it is a non-starter. Thanks |
