DC Public Preschools

I keep hearing about private preschools on this board. Are there any public preschools in DC and is the reason nobody mentions them because they are not good?

There are public pre-K programs for 4 y.o.'s in the elementary schools, but places are allocated among eligible residents by lottery. I have never heard of public programs for younger children, although that doesn't mean there aren't any...

There are a number of pre-school co-operative programs offered through the DC Parks and Recreation dept. There is a small fee associated with these programs, I think it's 35.00 a week. The one my daughters attend (Mitchell Park) is great. It has been the perfect introduction to school, and my girls are thriving there. We are looking at public /charter Pre-K programs for the fall.
