if applying two years in a row to a school does that help your chances or have no impact whatsever?

I have heard parents at various schools say that repeated applications to the same school shows you're "really interested" in the school, but who knows. My kid was waitlisted at our top choice last year, so I'm curious about the answer to this myself.

Perisistence is good.

But you also need to make an honest assessment - were you truly on the "wait list" or simply one of the "actually rejected but too nice to say so, wait list." Sometimes honest introspection might help (i.e., if DC's WPPSI scores were not 95% or higher, you probably were actually rejected). At other times, it's really too hard to say unless the AD took you aside and made it clear where you really stood.

Check with the AD to get an honest assessment. If the school wants you to reapply, the AD will tell you that in the conversation. The other strategy is to wait a few years. Some children do not interview well in PK, when interviews matter, but they are star students who test really well by grade 4 or 6.

It's not persistence per se but some years whatever demographic your kid would be part of happens to be filled with others who have priority (sibs, kids of alums or teachers) and the next year, those kids are already in. So it's just a matter of giving your kid a chance at more slots. That said, talking to the AD is a good idea. If you don't get encouragement, it's probably not worth the effort. (And not getting encouragement may simply be a matter of the fact that the AD knows there are even more priority kids in your kid's cohort applying next year).
