I am in search of recent parent reviews/thoughts on Westbrook Elementary School. I went through the archives and found some information but its a few years old.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. My DD would be transferring from private to Westbrook - 2nd grade this January. We are moving into the area. Looking for insight on homework levels, after school activities, parental involvement at the school etc. Thanks |
It is a great school from what I have heard. Our kids didn't go there but many of their friends in middle school did and they all seem like they liked it and the parents liked it as well.
You can't go wrong with it. Homework is homework, not a lot and I am sure some will trash the 2.0 and crowded classes but look at the kids, they are happy and learning. Welcome to the area. |

I live in the neighborhood, with kids now in high school. My neighbors tell me it's still a great school and, with the long-overdue school addition, now has a great facility. Afterschool activities are good, many families congregate on the playground if the weather is nice, and the teachers who are still there from my kids' day are terrific. I don't know specifically about homework, but the kids on my street are often out playing in the afternoon so it doesn't appear to be crushing. The one thing I don't know much about is the new principal. |
Wonderful school in a safe part of Bethesda. She will be fine. |
LOL. Where are the unsafe parts of Bethesda? |
that's what I was wondering. |
Just wait until the Purple Line brings rampaging hordes of UMCP students to riot drunkenly in front of Georgetown Cupcake. (I am making a joke.) |
Just look at the "schools at a glance" section on the MCPS website. You'll see that it is predominantly white (probably more so than most other elem schools in MCPS), and it has a very low percentage of students receiving FARMs. Judge as you will. |
^^ IGNORANT A** TROLL ALERT! |
Overcrowded. |
Overcrowded and feeds into BCC. A a newcomer, you should know that you want an elementary that feeds into Whitman High School. |
Why? BCC is much better. |
Whtiman has higher test scores, college acceptances appear tobe pretty evenly matched. BCC is right in downtown Bethesda and has slightly more diversity, if you care about that. I'm in BCC and wouldn't move to Whitman for schools, but there is probably a small cachet still to Whitman zoning in real estate pricing. |
Westbrook is an amazing school. It has huge parent involvement and is very much a neighborhood school. Take a look at their website. You can see from the site that there is a ton of parent involvement. It is NOT overcrowded. It was just renovated and enlarged. The new principal is lovely and seems to have a very nice relationship with faculty and parents. The homework so far for my second grader is not very much at all. I am not a fan of homework in second grade, so this is a plus for me. There are lots of extracurriculars. Call and speak to the principal or PTA president about the school. That's a good way to get a feel for it. |
