Skill Builders for OT

Anonymous
I would like DS to receive extra OT assistance to help with handwriting skills and preparing for K. Has anyone used them?

Yes. Our OT is no longer there. Skill levels vary greatly, but every OT there charges the same. I heard a lot of horror stories before we tried, but it was convenient and while one did not work out, our second one worked out well...and then she left after a year.

One thing I didn't like...our OT would always start the session late, spend about five minutes set up, then end ten minutes early to leave time to talk to me and me to pay. Looking back, it was a waste of money - but I am sure all OTs are different, as is your situation.

We did OT at Skill Builders in McLean and had a good experience. It wasn't critical for our child, but he had fun and it built confidence.

If you want it covered by insurance try Good Beginnings.

I preferred Good Beginnings over Skill Builders. The OT was MUCH better and my insurance covered it. At GB, I paid $20 per visit, whereas at SB I had to pay $110 and I got reimbursed, but it was a smaller about (maybe $55 -- I forget).

Yeah, I get the sense at Skillbuilders it's all about making money and they will say anything about how talented a provider is to get you in the door. There are a few people who's names I was given who are supposed to be amazing there, but good luck getting in with those people if they even still work there. Good Beginnings seemed to truly care. The only downside is the providers at Good Beginnings seemed rushed, but it did not affect quality of care. Insurance doesn't pay them as much as it should and I could tell they go at an exhausting pace. The OTs at Skillbuilders seem less stressed, but overall we had a better experience with Good Beginnings.
