Should I get agressive? i/e see an RE?

Hi
Wondering if you guys think I should schedule testing with an RE? Backround-I'm 42, had a m/c in May at 10 weeks, have 5 kids. Dh and I decided to try again, and i have a 'pre conception' visit with my midwives today.

Should I persue testing like HSH, AMH (?) and such? I don't think I have ANY time to waste at this age! But, we did get pregnant easily with the one I lost (and all the others) so I don't know....and if I do get preg this month, what about progesterone? Aren't us older mamas often low in that??

It certainly doesn't hurt to make an appt. Hopefully you will conceive before you meet with the RE or start testing.

My guess is that at 42 you are just looking for that golden egg that is chromosomally OK. So it's a matter of luck of the cycle.

Yes, that is how I feel-I'm not sure if any of that testing stuff makes a difference.

Given your background, I would probably try for 3 months. Then see an RE if you don't get pregnant.

If anything, you'd have better insight into what your egg reserve looks like. Not sure there is much they can do. I guess you could do a stim cycle to try to release more eggs/cycle to increase odds of finding a good egg. You could test the embyros. But that would involve more than just taking progesterone.

Have you been been TTC at all since your m/c? If so, I'd go ahead and make an appt now. Or wait another cycle or two first.

Good luck, OP!

No. If you can get pregnant, you will get pregnant on our own. Keep trying.

Back from my appt and that is what the midwife said! Tried Last month, this month (if not preg) one more month, then call. And if I am preg before then, we'll do progesterone support. I feel like I have a good game plan at the moment!

What? How does this make any sense?

OP here-it DOESN"T. I think whomever posted it is one of those who thinks that anyone over, say, 35, is a maternity fossil. Hopefully no one will heed his/her advice.

Huh? i posted that, and I am 40, pregnant with my second and coming from a long line of older moms.

You have no trouble getting pregnant so what do you need RE for? Your own history of fertility is much more predictive than any test they can run on you. They cant help you stay pregnant. You just need regular sex and it will happen eventually or not (more likely it will).

The point of considering an RE is to find out if there are barriers to getting and staying pregnant. Just because she had previous children does not preclude her from current problems.

Yes, there are barriers. Her eggs are older and she is more likely to miscarry, which is exactly what happened. I really see no point in going to RE, they might play along for a couple of cycles but will quickly advise her to use donor eggs. But to each his own.

Oh, you are a fertility specialist? Good to have one on this thread

With 5 children already, NO...I would not...but to each their own. Treatments are extremely expensive, and with 5 kids already, it is very likely that the money could be used wisely elsewhere. You are obviously very fertile, and I would try on your own. If it is meant to be then it will happen.

Not, I am not a specialist. However, I also do not stand to gain anything from sucking OP into escalating line of treatments.
