8 m.o. DD swallowed some paper

Anonymous
She was chewing on a paper box and managed to swallow a little paper. I am not particularly worried, but just wondering if there is anything I should do or look out for.

Thanks

It's fine as long as it was just a little bit. But in the future if you have concerns when your child swallows something, you should call the Poison Control Hotline. They tell you what to do for anything your child has ingested.

My daughter has eaten and ingested a ton of paper, paper towels, napkins, tissues, etc. She always seems to get a corner before we can get it away from her. Unless it's ink from a newspaper or something, your dd should be okay.

A little paper never hurt anyone. When my son was 2-3 months old, I don't remember exactly, we still had an old sofa that had been my inlaws' "good" furniture. It was stuffed with feathers, that would work their way out of the cushions. One day I was sitting on the sofa with my son on my lap and one of these little feathers landed right under his nose. Before I could brush it off he inhaled it! I called our pediatrician's office and the nurse told me it would just work its way down his throat to his digestive tract, no big deal. But we finally got rid of that damn furniture after that!

you should look for it in the other end....

what kind of question is this omg!

PP, it is a perfectly normal question from someone who needs a little reassurance. Don't read parenting forums if you don't like questions like this.

OP -- this (eating paper/cardboard) is why they make cloth books for babies (who chew on the board books and eat them, too!) Just a little extra roughage for the day.

You probably WILL see it on the way out if you look, but there's no need to IMO.

OP, if it's any consolation, I have found some very strange things out the other end in my son's diaper when he was little. E.g., a bright orange price tag sticker that I did not even know had gone in.

OP here - thanks everyone. I wasnt really worried but just wanted to make sure there was nothing serious to worry about. I have no doubt that this will only be the beginning of many eaten non-food items.

Just wait until you find a dozen or so unchewed yellow grapes from daycare snack mixed with #2
(talk about a scary sight until I put 1+1 together).

OP: DC #2, now 8 months also recently ate paper. She loves to rip it (I think she learned that from my mom's puppy), and if you don't watch her carefully she will get it in her mouth so fast. I haven't seen any come out the other end, but I'm not the only one changing her (but I'm probably the only one willing to look :wink.

With DC#1, right around 9 months, DH and I were changing him and noticed some yellow chunks. After careful observation, we realized they were corn kernels. We asked the nanny the next day, and she said that she was eating some corn and our son really wanted some so she gave it to him, even though we have a big list on the fridge of the 8 food items not to give a child under 1. I was stressed, DH told me to relax. Four years later, no sign of allergies, thank goodness.

My son did the exact same thing!!! I saw a $ on a little orange dot, and at first I thought it was a Skittle.

Wait til they eat crayons. That's a fun diaper to change.

I ate paper almost every day until around 3rd grade - its wood pulp. In one end and out the other, I suppose.

(could be worse, I could have been the kid eating paste.)

Mine's really into cat food. Does that count as a non-food item? Her coat is nice and shiny, which is a bonus.

Hey, PP, my little boy loves cat food too. It always makes my DH and I laugh. We can't get DS to eat his actual dinner, but then once he is down from his high chair, he goes straight to the cat food and starts eating it. Fun stuff.
