I live in Bowie, 20715.
There are some very good (and highly rated) elementary schools in Bowie. I've talked to people who have experience with one of the middle schools and the high school, and they had positive things to say. So don't necessarily believe the negativity. I love my neighborhood and surrounding area. There are lots of families. It's very safe. I live in the Levitt section, but I used to live in one of the newer sections, and it was safe there, too. |
I live in Bowie, MD. (20716, but close to 20715.)
I find Bowie to be very safe and family friendly. You do need to consider the schools, but the elementary schools are good in several neighborhoods. I believe Whitehall and tulip grove elementary schools rank very highly on great schools. Heather hills is now a TAG school but gets 10/10 on great schools. Kenilworth elementary is I believe 7/10, but the school is improving and the PTA recently funded an outdoor classroom for that school which is pretty neat. I'd avoid the pointer ridge neighborhood though, personally. It's not that it's terrible or unsafe, but it isn't one of the better neighborhoods and the elementary school does not do well. Property crime (theft) seems to be higher there too. I believe the MS and HS will improve if families make use of the schools instead of instantly putting their kids in private. Plus, as the students in the current ES's move into the upper schools they seem likely to improve, especially with the new superintendent who did a lot to turn around the schools in the last county he was in. Allen pond park is great, there's plenty of shopping and such nearby. There's a park and ride for free parking to catch metro bus to new Carrollton. I find living here very convenient and enjoyable. |
I live in 20715 which feeds into Whithall ES which is a National Blue Riboon school. Bowie is nice to live in, quiet yet close to the shopping areas. You should get a nice house for that amount of money. |
We moved out of 20720. The elementary we went to was OK but I wouldn't send my kids to the middle or high schools, and so we chose to move. You will be able to afford a nice house, but think twice about the schools if you have kids.
It would be helpful to know where you are commuting to and whether schools are an issue. |
Crofton, MD has better schools and is Anne Arundel county. All the newer stores are in Crofton (hello Wegmans, my love), and I imagine resale value is better. |
Crofton is even blander than Bowie and it will be the "new" Bowie in 10 years....and then all scared Crofton-ites will move to Millersville and Crownsville. |
![]() Funny, yet spot on. |
You had me at Wegman's. |
There is a Wegmen's close to Bowie! |
NP here. As I live in 20707, I agree. But one caveat, try to find one of the neighborhoods zoned for Bond Mill elementary school. Not only is it the best elementary school in PG County, but the homes zoned for that school hold their values better. |
Seriously. People there is a Wegmans right off of 495 like 5 minutes from Bowie. |
