Private & Independent Schools
In our preschool, the class parents collected cash and presented it on behalf of the class. What is the norm in K and beyond? Or does it vary from school to school?
It varies from school to school. Have you asked the class parent?
I have the same question. Is it expected/appropriate to give holiday gifts to teachers? I have not heard anything from our class parent regarding coordinating a holiday gift.
I am a class parent in a public school and collected money for a class gift. Maybe private is different.
As the Class/room Parents - in my experience in a private school - the end of year gift is organized by the room parent - but some parents still give individual gifts. The Holiday gifts are totally given by whomever wants to give - teachers get gift certificates, candy, whatever...
Ditto. For the Holidays, I usually do a cute ornament made by the kids and a gift card to a bookstore for my kid's teachers $35-$50 as I figure they can use it for themselves, or if that makes them uncomformtable, they can buy something for the classroom. This year, however, I bypassed the gift cards due to the economy and give smaller gifts with a note from the kids. For end of year we always do a class collection (suggested amt $10-$20) and give the teacher an Am Ex card with the cash loaded on it, and then a big photo of the class signed by each kid on the mat. |
Totally depends on the school. At our independent school, holiday gifts are neither encouraged nor expected (says so right in our parent handbook), and if given are supposed to be very modest. I think this means a little card or something from the kids. At our preschool, I usually did $50 per teacher (there were three in the class).
