Coba--Mexico

We are going to Club Med Cancun in November. Kids are 6 and 9. Has anyone climbed the Coba ruins with kids this age? Go on our own or pay for the tour?

Club Med is very safe but you DO NOT want to leave the resort on your own.

^^ correct. Do not go anywhere by yourself.

We rented a car from Playa del Carmen and visited Coba on our own. It was lovely --- wooded and pretty. Climbing the ruins may be too much for the kids, especially the 6 yo, but there is plenty of scampering to be done.

We stayed in an apartment in Playa del Carmen last February and took our 3 and 5 year olds to Tulum and Coba. Both were great, but I recommend Coba more if you only have time for one. We got to Tulum right as the ruins opened in order to get in front of the cruise crowds. Paid for a tour guide, but wouldn't do that in retrospect because my kids didn't have the patience for it. Just buy a book or read about it on your own before you go. Then we drove into the old town of Tulum and had a GREAT lunch at this shack on the beach. Then drove about 40 minutes in to Coba and really loved that. I don't recall the exact price, but I think for about $20 we got two bicycles and rode around the ruins. Weren't rushed at all. We climbed a bit up one of the old ruins, but then deemed it not safe with the kids. But it was still absolutely worth it. There are LOTS of families there - more than at Tulum, which, at least when we went, was more senior citizens and college spring breakers. My girls still talk about Coba. Have fun!
