DC is new to this center (5th grade) and came home and told me that because of a "block schedule" for specials, there will be no recess on certain days. I was quite perplexed so checked with a
neighbor's child who verified that in 5th grade last year on some days there was no recess or a shortened recess. I find this to be unacceptable. Kids need to go outside and get fresh air/exercise. Recess is so short as it is, why do they need to cut it out or cut it back? Isn't there an FCPS rule that elementary age kids need a certain amount of recess? This only adds to the many reasons that obesity is a big pediatric problem these days. |

Are the kids at your center struggling with an obesity problem?

My son is in 3rd grade and only has 15 minutes of recess. He asked me to address this at the next PTA meeting. I may just do that. 15 minutes is nothing!
|
| Is it Mondays only that there is no recess? Some grade levels can not have Monday recess because of the early release, and that is considered to be okay because it is not a full day. |
Our non-center school does not have recess on Mondays, even for the kindergartners and first graders. |
you might as well as send your child to school singapore, korea, china, or japan. 15 mins recess is abuse. 45-60 mins recess should be the minimum. A long recess and then a short recess later in the day. |
| Appalling! Kids need recess. I'd complain about it too. |
Given that they are very competitive academically and don't spend much time outside or playing sports - they probably are! DC is very active and skinny but I still want her to get fresh air daily and a chance to unwind during school - she has never had recess on Mondays. To cut it out on other days also seems unacceptable. |
| Not only do they need the exercise and fresh air, but kids need time to engage with their peers on a social level. They need to negotiate how to play a game, make decisions, take turns, join in, etc WITHOUT the teacher mediating everything. |
This is an incorrect stereotype. There are as many kids playing competitive sports in my kid's AAP class as there are in my non-AAP kid's class. I can't think of a single obese or overweight kid in my child's AAP grade. They are just as skinny as all the other kids in the school. |
| Is your school overcrowded? Our center has shortened recess because they have so many kids that need to make it onto the playground each day. In our case, it has nothing to do with AAP |
It is an overcrowded center but this is just purely due to their "block schedule". I believe they are now trying to do something to correct the issue - only after one child cried about it. |
Isn't 5th grade a little old to be crying about recess? |
