My DD is going through the application process. I've been focused on grades, scores, majors. But the other threads on this board got me wondering and worried about which of these great fit schools might actually have a strong drug culture.

Every college has either a drug culture or drinking culture. I would worry more about the latter. I don't think its possible to avoid. |
I have heard of someone trying to choose a school with a strong sports or religious culture, but I have never heard of anyone looking for a strong drug culture - normally that is something people try to avoid.
But each to their own, I guess. |
Thinking of starting up a business?

![]() Power down the helicopter, mom. If your child is old enough to go to college, they're old enough to make their own decisions regarding drug use. And believe me, "strong drug culture" or not, if they wants drugs they will find them. |
Reed. |
I'd be as more, or more, concerned about a binge drinking culture, which I can tell you exists at many top level schools ... to protect my own alma mater I'll avoid naming names. ;-o

If you are worried about it, may I suggest Liberty University or Brigham Young?
Otherwise, I think all colleges have a subculture of partying. Not all students participate. |
Brown, Dartmouth, Kenyon, Tulane, Reed, Colorado all have big time drug reputations. Yes, there is drug use on most campuses, but it is more pervasive on some. |
Anywhere where you have a bunch of smart students clustered together, some of whom like to question authority, you'll have a contingent of people who experiment with drugs. For what it's worth, my best friend went to MIT and was into the drug culture there BIG TIME. |
Or Principia. It's Christian Scientist and apparently quite strict. |
+1. Also many kids come from pretty privileged backgrounds. |
How would you suggest avoiding a school with a strong drug culture if you don't know which ones they are? |
Kenyon? The rest I get, although I'd put Dartmouth more in the category of category V hurricane-strong drinking. |
Visit. Read up on college culture. (Back in the day I liked "Insider's Guide to the Colleges," though there may be better resources in this internet age.) |
