what are your initial thoughts on the new Wegmans in Mont County?

It's been so crowded so I just peeked in but I haven't grocery shopped there yet. Looks so different than any other store I've been to. Curious if people will be switching to Wegmans over Giant and Safeway as I hear the prices are better too. IF you know the store well-recommend some products unique to them.

The store brand items are cheaper but the premium items are about the same. You end up spending all of your savings when you get to the cheese, meat, and seafood department anyway! Those are the things I would go out of my way to get there.

I shop the Fairfax Wegman's, so can't comment on the MoCo one specifically. I have a love-hate relationship with that store. Yes, their prices are good, but like PP said, you can't go from milk to bread without passing the $25/lb cheese (which is really good, btw).

I buy their store brand whenever possible-- just as good and much less $$, even if you clip coupons. Their store brand marinades are excellent, as is their sliced bread. Ketchup and sodas are about the same as national brand, and these are two things I can usually taste when they're generic. I also buy their store brand soups, broth, pasta, pasta sauce (specifically, Grandma's Pomodoro Sauce), cereal, pickles, olives, croutons, pretzels. Never shopped generic pre-Wegman's, but I've been pleased.

FYI, I work in PG County near the Lanham Wegman's. The first month was a madhouse (from what I heard from others). I waited about six weeks after it opened before I ventured there for the first time and it was much less chaotic. Just wait a few weeks and then go to evaluate for yourself. Let the furor subside first.

I went yesterday.

Thoughts:

1) The carts are in an illogical place if you park on the 2nd level. Go downstairs and to the left.

2) Produce prices are about the same as Giant/Safeway/HT.

3) Milk is a fantastic loss leader -- $2.69/gallon for regular nonorganic.

4) The store-brand organic line is about on par, cost wise, with generics at the bigger stores. But it's better. A can of Wegmans organic black beans, for example, is 99 cents, within 10 cents of the generic nonorganic brand at Giant (organic, with the same nutritional label, at Giant, is $1.30/can). The organic chicken breast is similar in price to nonorganic Perdue.

5) It's really effing hard to pass up the extras -- the fresh-squeezed juice, the made-in-house pico, etc.

But all in all, I was impressed with the quality of what I got. And the blood orange juice is unbelievable.

What is the closest Wegman's to NW DC?

^ They said it was freshly squeezed in store, no added sugar.

I can't swear to the veracity of that statement, but it does taste fresh.

The only stores I know are in MD: Lanham and Germantown.

I love wegnan's more than I love anything on earth except my family, but only on their good days. I love that you can get conventional, organic, specialty, and good generic items all in one place, plus toilet paper etc that isn't made of small batch flax for $50/roll. If you are disciplined, you can spend what you planned to spend and you don't have to go anywhere else.

PP here. I used to live in upstate NY where we first discovered Wegman's and they were plentiful. Now we live 40 frustrating minutes from the closest one and it makes me sad.

THANK YOU pp because you have finally explained, in relatable terms, WHY I should get jazzed about wegmans. Before now, in all 6,538 previous threads about wegmans, no one has ever once made a compelling case as to why I should visit (since, as a District resident, I'm already 15 feet away from 3 whole foods, a Safeway, one Trader Joes, 3 giants, a wagschall's, and 30 feet away from 2 Costcos.) What could wegmans possibly add to those impressive options?

Now I understand - the cheapo toilet paper is under the same roof as the $30/lb rack of lamb, the Coke, plus the bulk organic quinoa, and tampons that actually absorb and aren't handcrafted by indigenous tribal women under some fair trade pact.
