Enrolling in a school out of your district

Has anyone ever done this successfully? Have you either used a relative's address to send your child to that school or received permission from a principal to enroll your child there (and pay tuition)? How doable is this?

What jurisdiction?

Three thoughts:

#1 I've heard of people who live in PG County using a relative in DC to send their child to DC Schools. If the relative you're using is the child's grandparent that's the simplest way because the grandparent can get guardian status pretty easily.

#2 If you're trying to do this on the shady side (basically claiming the child lives in DC when it is not true), you are not very likely to get away with this at a Charter school. The good ones go over documentation with a fine-toothed comb because of their concerns about not getting funded. The not-so-good ones aren't worth it.

#3 No matter which jurisdiction you choose, you're going to be shocked at the price tag. The out-of-state cost to attend even a bad school will closely resemble many private school tuition bills.

OP here. Trying to go into Montgomery, not a charter school, using grandparents' address. I know people do this all the time, at least they did when I was in school. I don't feel great about changing legal guardianship though.

I don't know your age, but everything is computerized now in terms of student records and the establishment of residency is part of the record. From the MoCo Public Schools Website - Policies Related to Enrollement:

Identity of Person Enrolling Student and Relationship to Student

Person enrolling student must present legal identification and proof of relationship to student. Anyone other than parent or legal guardian must complete MCPS Form 335-73 Determination of Residency and Tuition Status and contact the Residency Compliance Office at 301-315-7324.

* Photo ID
* Driver's license
* Passport
* Permanent resident alien card
* Naturalization papers
* Birth certificate
* Court order
* Separation or divorce decree

I have recently been thinking about this but did not do any research ( we still have a year till we reach K -age)- our Public ES really sucks in terms of its results and the student body. I do not feel comfortable sending my kids there...yet I pay my taxes...is there any way to argue with the system that I should be able to send my kid to a better performing school? Thanks!

That's what OOB lotteries are for, though I would avoid using the word "sucks" on an application. Similarly, I would avoid direct criticism of the student body and confine my complaints to test scores and safety (behavioral) issues.
