Summers over -- Larry S has withdrawn

Larry Summers has pulled out of the Fed Chair consideration: http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/15/us/federal-reserve-summer/index.html?iref=allsearch

I, for one, am relieved, both that a champion of deregulation won't be in there and that a divisive fight will be avoided.

Great news. But let's wait to see who the replacement is before we celebrate. It is easily within Obama's ability to pick someone even worse.

Let's hope that the white house doesn't pass over Yellen simply in order to avoid appearances of 'capitulating." It would be a terrible shame if the most qualified candidate were not chosen simply because she was, against her wishes, dragged into a drawn out, intensely political fight. I can't imagine who they could pick now, perhaps Fischer, but let's hope they do the reasonable thing.

I think this whole thing is sad, and no way to choose a central banker....a banker for money..

WELL THE MEN COME IN THESE PLACES
AND THE MEN ARE ALL THE SAME
YOU DON`T LOOK AT THEIR FACES
AND YOU DON`T ASK THEIR NAMES
YOU DON`T THINK OF THEM AS HUMAN
YOU DON`T THINK OF THEM AT ALL
YOU KEEP YOUR MIND ON THE MONEY
KEEPING YOUR EYES ON THE WALL

I`M YOUR CENTRAL BANKER
A BANKER FOR MONEY
I`LL DO WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO
I`M YOUR CENTRAL BANKER
A BANKER FOR MONEY
AND ANY OLD M2 WILL DO

Summers is a brilliant man. Made some misstatements along the way, but don't be so sure that having a career academic without any real world experience is better for the job.

no he's not. he's an asshole...in the ebginning of the recovery he actively was against christina romer's recommendation for a bigger stimulus which would've helped more.

he's not only an asshole, i don't think he's that brilliant of an economist either (academic or otherwise).

Yellen would be a good fed pick.

If I were POTUS, I would pick Joe Stiglitz, Jeffrey Sachs, simon johnson, or Mo El-Erian. One at Fed Chair and one as Treas sec.

I support Summers ONLY because he stood up to radical delusional feminists at Harvard, and paid the price. Apparently they couldn't hear that at the very right tail of the bell curve for math ability, men outnumber women. Something which can be deemed from SAT score data.

I'm sorry, but it is impossible to take seriously anyone who writes "something which can be deemed." Clearly you are in the right tail on the bell curve of pretentious and incorrect word use.

More like right time, right place, right connections. Look at his positions, he was wrong on all of them. At least a broken clock is right twice a day, unlike summers.

Do your homework before talking nonsense.
He was one of the chief (and patronizing male) opponents of Brooksley Borne, the head of the CFTC, when she pleaded for better disclosure requirements from derivatives issuers, particularly in the CMO market. If these d....s had listened to her, the entire financial collapse might have been averted. He is one of the main architects of deregulation, and I can't fathom why Obama is soooo enamored with him.

Larry Summers is very over-rated. Some of the changes he made have been downright disastrous.

It bothers me that Obama was so enamored of him.
