I work for a local bank in the computer department. I need to give notice...but am unsure if they will walk me out afterwards. I know that they do so for manager level employees...but as a person in IT I will be done so too.
I have access to elevated privileges. Is that common practice for a bank? I've never been walked out in any other business/company but none of them have been banks. Thanks. |
I have only ever seen someone who was fired escorted out of a building but I work for non profits. Those of us that have quit left when we wanted to on our last day.
I know almost all investment banks escort employees out the door, at least for front office jobs. I would assume the same goes does back office jobs. I witnessed many such instances during the financial crisis.
Also, I've seen this for workers who were let go and quit on their own.
Saw it a lot in consulting when someone went to a competitor. Have your personal stuff together, info from email you might want/need, before you give notice.
Fairly common in financial services. Make sure everything is in order before giving notice.

Yup - fairly common if you have the power to mess stuff up.
Although you might be on good terms and not planning, they have policies. I wouldn't take it personally. Make sure your stuff is in order before you give notice. |
I have a friend who was fired who wasn't even allowed to go back to her desk accompanied. They said, we I'll bring you your coat and purse and FedEx everything else to your apartment. I would subtlety clear out any extras you have (shoes, tampons, whatever) before giving notice.
I know I gave a month's notice and was on good terms with the company. Still they made sure to keep track of my every computer move so I couldn't destroy anything, limited my access card to my hours and did a lot of other things to protect themselves. I went from feeling good to feeling like I was an awful person and employee. I understood where they were coming from but when it was actually underway it was a miserable way to leave. I second those that say having all of your personal out of your office before you give notice, also any contact information, personal emails etc gone and away. Once you give notice you are the not welcome.
Happened to friends in banks and one working for an IMF contractor.
I was a manager in an IT department of a large bank and it was standard procedure for resigning employees to be escorted out of the building.
I have also only seen this for people who were fired (usually you dont get to go back to your desk at all) but not for people who quit.
During the financial crisis, a friend was fired from his seven- figure job at a large investment bank. He was not allowed to go back to his desk to get his jacket, briefcase or phone, all of which were brought to him as he waited with a guard in the lobby of his building. Everything else in his office was packed up and shipped to his home. Surprising at that level, but he was treated like a criminal, even though the layoff was not for cause -- he felt completely humiliated. Several other colleagues at his level were let go that same day, and all treated similarly. Ouch!
