How to quit DCUM?

Anonymous
I think I've got a serious addictioni going here. And I never feel good after reading it. Kinda like having waayy too much cotton candy or something else that isn't good for you.

So, in typical fashion of someone who has an addiction, I'm actually turning to you for advice. How do I stop checking for new threads on this forum?!

When you find out let me know.

Two suggestions:
1) Just cut yourself off cold turkey
2) Post something honest but controversial so that people attack you and make you feel so bad that you never want to come back

funny...on my other favorite forum, someone today was also saying that her message board addiction is getting out of hand...missing the train, late for work, not getting laundry done, etc. I know the snarkiness on this forum can be unnerving sometimes, but I've actually seen MUCH worse on other forums. I've narrowed my daily forums to 2 sites, and yes I can't stay away from DCUM either!

I had my IT department block it for awhile. Then, when I was looking for a new nanny, I had them unblock it. So, I've had my new nanny since August but I can't stop coming here either!

I have the same problem. I do a lot of work from home, and I "reward" myself by going on DCUM, and i also overindulge. I've actually missed deadlines because I've wasted so much time here. We need a DCUM 12 step group.

The first step is admitting you have a problem...

I think asking DCUM how to quit DCUM is like asking your bookie how to kick a gambling habit

Great idea but I don't want the people at work to know how much time I'm wasting!

What's your other favorite site?

I used to visit every now and then, simply for entertainment. A couple of months ago I lost my nanny position after several years under less than ideal circumstances. I was feeling very emotional and had a lot of time on my hands. I started coming here everyday, first just reading, then replying sometimes, than getting worked up over some of the posts and engaging in the typical back and forth that goes on here everyday. Then I got so depressed I stayed off for four days. Now I just try to be funny and not buy into the negativity, entertaining though it sometimes is. Still addicted though-came here for advice, stayed for the drama and stories. I check this site more than my bank account. I know I need help but insurance would never cover it. Try considering it a guilty pleasure, k'know, like the Maury show, trashy novels and chocolate.

Good point, pp, it's better than drinking.

I'm so with you, OP. I'm on here WAY too much.

In all seriousness, one strategy would be to allow yourself to check the site one time per day, for a specific period of time. Say 1/2 hour or something. Kind of like how you might watch a TV show each night.
