MS-Accounting or MBA?

Anonymous
I'm trying to decide what to do now. I've been out of the workforce for a while and have had a hard time getting a job. I've decided to go back to grad school and would like to hear your thoughts on this. Is a Masters in Accounting really worth it? Everything I've seen for forensic accounting (my interest) just requires a bachelor's degree and a CPA, CFE, or CIA. So should I really just try for that? I feel like I'm nearing the end of my time to go to grad school (33) so I want to make an informed, well-rounded decision. Should I get an MBA and then a CPA or MS-Accounting? Please help!

FWIW, I have a business degree (mktg) so not enough to simply take ge CPA exam alone.

I thought you had to have a masters to sit for the CPA exam. Personally, I'd do the M in Acctng then get your CPA. You'll always have a job.

How about a MS in tax? MBA is too common.

You need 150 hrs to sit for the exam. My MBA was 60 hrs. I'd go for the M. Acct or M. Tax and then sit for the exam. Skip the MBA.

I do MBA admissions consulting. Your profile doesn't sound compelling, I'd look at accounting.

Absolutely! I have MS in Accounting and a CPA license and get bombarded with the headhunters' emails almost daily.

Thanks to all who replied! I think I will stick to my original plan with the MS in Accounting. I really do feel better about my decision now.

FYI I'm an accountant and the hours can be brutal: NOT family friendly at all. Just FYI.

What can one do with an MS in Taxation?

Work in a tax department of just about any medium and bigger company. Work for PwC one of the other big accounting firms. So many possibilities.

Agree. I used to work at one of the Big 4 and the hours were really bad, especially during busy season.
