Technical Writing

Editor here who wants to make the leap to technical writing. Wondering how to go about it from anyone who's BTDT. Any and all advice welcome, thanks.

What kind of technical writing are you interested in? Do you have a lot of experience with Word, Acrobat Pro, FrameMaker or other tools? What kind of editing do you do now?

I think I'd be good at end-user documentation, but honestly I'm interested to try any kind of technical writing. I have a lot of experience with the Microsoft Office suite, but not as much with the various Adobe programs, outside of Photoshop. My background is in medical editing.

Have you attended any Society for Technical Communication (STC) chapter meetings? It's a great way to network and find out about jobs in your area. Go to Amazon.com and get a copy of JoAnn Hackos' book about documentation--I think that's a standard in the field (at least, it used to be several years ago when I was doing tech writing). Good luck!
