I don’t feel rich, bc this is an expensive area. But statistically, anyone sending their children to private school without financial aid is likely in the top 1% of earners. Annual income of ~525K puts you in that bracket.

Is that WEALTH, like we see with many people around here? Not at all. But in the area and in the country? We are absolutely considered rich.

And I share that I’m white in hopes someone who grew up steeped in white supremacy and espousing racist views might—just might—pause to consider my words. I have a lot to unlearn. But I’m trying. And part of that is speaking up to other white people.

Most families at our private school are not rich, unless your idea of rich is being able to afford basic things like school tuition.

At DC’s school, when a black child breaks a rule and blames it on a white child, the white child is punished.

My bystander student saw this recently. The teachers didn’t bother to try to figure out what actually happened. They just took the black student’s word against several of the white students who were sitting nearby and saw/heard what happened.

What school is this? Sound like they treat Black kids the way white kids are normally treated and treat the white kids the way Blacks have historically been treated.

I've noticed that many families have become openly against diversity efforts. We are POC, and I've had parents casually express how DEI initiatives hurt the quality of the surrounding private schools. Although I'm disappointed in the lack of thoughtfulness, I'm not surprised.

I already pulled applications from a couple of schools that have suddenly committed to a less diverse path since I started my application process. I'm now nervous I will be stuck at a school where my child's presence diminishes its quality.

I would appreciate insights on the current climate of your current institution. I will not take it personally. I don't have the energy to be a part of a diversity struggle. I'm sure other POC parents will also agree.

If you raised a thoughtful and smart kid, their presence is not going to diminish the quality of the school. That said, people who knee-jerk into thinking that whiter means better or higher quality are not people I would want to associate with. Good luck to you and your kid.

Why bother asking?

I don’t think this means they want to become whiter. It just means they don’t want race to be a factor in admissions? Why would you want that?

Because you want your insitution to reflect broader society, to have diversity of opinions and experiences in the classroom and hallways? I don't know, why do you think it is better for schools to be whiter?

Why consider race at all? It shouldn’t matter for admissions.

Educate yourselves on the history of our country. On the structural racism that pervades every facet of society.

Truly, it is shameful that in 2024, you actually believe that rich white people have it hard out here. You chose to perpetuate the inequities we have, simply because you are uncomfortable. You disgust me.

Signed, a rich white person trying to unlearn the racism we were taught and help our kids have a better future
Is this a parody or are you for real?

That one anecdote related by a child is sufficient to establish the existence of a practice where the word of a black kid always trumps that of a white kids is patently ridiculous. Maybe they had a good reason to believe the one black kid over the several white witnesses. Perhaps those kids are known troublemakers that are not to be trusted. Maybe those kids were part of the crew terrorizing the black kid. I didn’t know that schools were to establish trust by majority rule.

Of course, there was a time when the word of a single white person could cause a black man to swing within the hour and have the spectacle gleefully memorialized in postcard form. And that’s not based on some singular anecdote of dubious credibility. That’s history.

you write like you just discovered racism, and you really want to share your new knowledge with the rest of the world.

I have no idea what that means and neither do you probably. But you just had to have something to say without really saying much at all.

An eye for an eye, right? Never mind that the children had absolutely nothing to do with any historical inequities. Is this Original Sin?

It’s not even true. And it’s hardly an eye for an eye anyway because there were no ropes involved as far as we know.
