+1. Adjusted *for size*. In one department. In one measure of outcomes. Did you even read the last page? |
and there it is - kid was unfortunately raised by "that" kind of parent who uses tired, overused trendy terms that highlight their attitude and outlook do better PP |
Except for Cali, VA has the best instate options? ARE YOU NUTS? |
I think VA has a lot of unique options but it’s missing the big state flagship that most kids can get into. I’m from AZ and we had U of A, ASU and NAU, all guaranteed admissions with > 3.0 and still possible for under that. Further, the cost was less. I wish VA had a big state U that was more accessible. For kids that aren’t at the tippy top, UVA and VT are not easy admits to say the least. And not all kids are into the smaller schools or want to stay locally for GMU. I also wish VA schools took less OOS kids. |
Where's the big state flagship in California that most kids can get into? Or Florida, NC, Texas, Georgia, Maryland, etc.? |
I'll say this for OP - neither UVA nor VT has a full linguistics department. UMD does. In this world of speech recognitions technology and large language model driven AI, that's a significant point to Maryland. |
UMD is Big Ten and a research giant located inside the beltway of the nations capital. Uva and VT are different type schools. |
Another MD v. VA thread. So tiresome. Both seem to have pretty good in state options - certainly a good chance at least 1-3 schools would be a good fit for your students. Unless you get caught up in the prestige-chasing nonsense. |
Maybe, but Macalester College and Pitzer manage to have their own linguistics departments. UVA has a 'Program' staffed by faculty from a bakers dozen of departments, mostly anthro and English. I'm a Virginia resident and usually inclined to side with Virginia schools in these threads, but that's a bit shocking to me. |
UMD is more geared toward contributing to the future of the world economy and culture. Just look at the companies and leading edge inventions that it’s alum produce.. Google, Underarmour, Sirius Satellite, Oculus, Pulse Doppler Radar, the Muppets, the Bar Code, the octane system, Fortnite, the Hybrid Engine, Broke Watergate, Seinfeld, The Wire, Soft Contact Lenses, Rechargeable pacemaker, Artificial Pancreas, Linear Programming…. UMD gets 1.3 billion a year in research funding and is a real asset the United States invests heavily in. |
Brb gonna write Governor Youngkin to chase more fed research dollars so UVA can invent the next Muppets. |
NP genius can’t be funded. The muppets are definitely genius. |
JMU does not accept students with a 3.0 |
It’s much more than most state public’s. |
JMU, GMU and VCU don’t work for you? Also, WM is already the most expensive public in the nation for in state students. No OOS students means even higher tuition. Hard pass. |
