Lets talk about MCM homes

Anonymous
Why aren't builders interested in building new ones?
I am not talking about contemporary, I am talking Mid Century Modern.
I would love to move right into a new MCM, well insulated (unlike the ones out there now), sleek lines, large windows.
The builders need architects, good ones who stick to the original concepts.
Builders need to just listen and leave their ideas about taste out of it.
I would love to see an whole "development" of MCM, afterall, they look better together.

Perhaps post a link to some examples

I LOVE MCM and grew up in a fabulous MCM in the midwest was so depressed when we moved here to discover that most homes have limited windows and feel closed in. Am starting to think that the heat of summer and bright sunlight has something to do with it. After a couple summers here all I want to do is close all the blinds to block the sun. And a friend told me their neighbor complains that their modern house (ultra modern, not MCM) gets boiling hot in summer because it is all glass. But another reason for the lack of interest in modern homes I think is the east coast stodgy conservatism. Having lived a lot of different places, I find this entire area to be lost in the past somehow. That said, every modern house that's come on the market has sold almost instantly, so the interest is there.

Yes, we can't all live in Hollins Hills (sp?).

So buy a lot and have one built, OP. That way you get exactly what you want.

PP here -- by the way, I do have a MCM house in the Midwest and I just shell out for AC and installed ceiling fans that are sleek as ceiling fans come. I love the open, airy feel and haven't had the drapes down since I moved in.

With an aging baby boomer society, why won't they build ramblers either? Land cost is high and they want the biggest ROI.

I'm with you, OP. There are a couple of gorgeous ones in McLean, but in general, this area is pretty disappointing architecturally.

Have you looked at Lake Barcroft? Many real MCM homes, many of which were designed by Charles Goodman. Personally, I love my MCM house. It has lots of windows but is surrounded by trees so it gets light without a ton of heat.

Are you familiar with http://moderncapitaldc.com/?
