beauvoir, nps, st pats, sidwell, gds, maret i'm looking for honest answers about them & stereotypes

Anonymous
i am trying to get a true feel about what these schools are really like and although stereotypes can be troubling at time, there can be some validity to the. what schools are known for being more waspy (if any), what about more democratic or republican, what about less or more diverse, more liberal? simple answers are fine. it is just very difficult for me to get an honest answer from people here b/c everyone is so politically correct. i'm just trying to figure out if we will fit into any of these schools better than others. i honestly have NOOOO idea! thanks so much!

The only way that you will get any sense of the fit of these school is to do visit them. Talk to the staff and if you get lucky, talk to some parents. They all have tours and open houses and I am willing to bet that you will get a gut reaction within the first 5 minutes. In terms of stereotypes, below is what a local doctor told me were his thoughts on some of the local private schools:

GDS - very liberal, very jewish, very rich, most diverse (not all areas not just race)
Beauvoir/St. Albans/NCS - very conservative, very waspy, very rich
Sidwell - somewhat liberal, very waspy, very rich

Did not get any info on the other schools that you listed.

OK, haven't we had this exact thread before? exact? and it ignited an unkind sh&t storm, esp. w respect to Jewish stereotypes.

Pls do us all a favor, search the archives from the past 2 months, and spare us from another 117 post thread unrelated to these actual schools.

op here...seriously....grow up! if you don't want to read it, then don't. it is that simple. if you are bothered that other random people are discussing something you don't like in cyberspace, then you need to fill up your time with other things. i'm not looking to ignite an argument with my post but i really want to know and i don't think the open houses are that clear of an indication. word of mouth i have found is the best info source...always and as i had previously stated washingtonians are so politically correct that noone wants to offend anyone by giving the real story of the schools, as their neighbor's kids go to one, their boss's kids to another, etc....

Is there one poster posting the same questions OVER AND OVER about these schools? It's always the same exact list of schools!!
Leave it alone already!! If you even have to ask these questions, you probably won't get in!

I've been through the process and the best advice I can give you is to go visit the schools and talk to as many parents as you can. You hear a lot of gossip and hearsay (especially on this site), but there's no substitute for doing the legwork. In my experience, I was pleasantly surprised by schools I had heard negative things about (like St. Albans), and less than impressed with schools I had heard were great. Bottom line is, you have to find the best fit for your family and your child, and the best way to do that is to check it out for yourself. For what it's worth, I've heard good things about NPS and St. Patrick's, and I was impressed with Maret and liked GDS. I assume you're looking at the lower schools (k-4). But so much depends on what YOU'RE looking for in a school.

Just read "Breaking Her Fall" by Stephen Goodwin. Order it on Amazon today! It will tell you all you need to know about the ritzy private schools in DC (probably more than you ever wanted to know). It starts with the Lowell School and just moves on . . . There is an assh*le on this board who says that he does not need a work of FICTION to tell him about what society is like. Hmmmm. Ponder than one for a minute and then your head will explode. (The same poster thinks that if the father is Jewish? But not the mother? In Judaism that makes the child Jewish. (NOT) And since he's mult-racial and has lived her for 29 YEARS, he knows IT ALL)).

What does this book say about Lowell? Does it mention the schools by name or by alias and you have inferred which schools they are?
Anonymous
Amy, please just lay off already. My child attends Lowell and it is incredibly laid back and economically and racially diverse, as well as family make up diversity. I think if you actually KNEW any people who attended this school, you would change your opinion. There are a lot of families, like mine!, that isn't rolling in money, yet we're welcomed with open arms there. I really don't know what your problem is Amy. Just leave it alone already. Enough of slandering these schools, the children and the parents just because you have some vendetta again private school education. Your kids will be going to Lafayette, right?? Do you really want me to list the MANY things wrong with this school??? About DC schools in general???

Yes, it is IMPLIED that the school is Lowell in that book, based on geographical indicators.

Thanks for all of the insults, PP. And yes, all of the geographical indicators point to Lowell as the start of the book. I'm sure Goodwin just pulled all of it out of thin air. It should be classified under Science Fiction or Fantasy.
