3 year old getting a frenectomy. Advice?

My 3 year old has a tongue that didn't prevent him from nursing but is now getting in the way of his speech. We're getting a frenectomy at Feldman ENT and I wanted to hear from those with kids this age who have gotten frenectomies. How did your child react? How did you prep them? What was recovery time like? What should we expect and have on hand?

We're nervous given his age - had we known when he was a baby we CERTAINLY would have done it then! Anyway, I'd love to hear from you.

it's making me nervous that no one replied! Is it that unusual?

No an unusual procedure by most people get it taken care of when their cildren are infants.

Either way kids tend ot bounce back from things quikly so I wouldn't worry too much.

OP -

I know several 3-yr-olds with "normal" tongues who are still learning how to say certain words. Speech is still developing at that age.

My DC had an attached frenulum and because we were at a birth center that did not offer a cutting service, we did not have it cut. She BF'd just fine and learned to speak normally -- she's 9 now.

We had many warnings of how difficult life would be if we did not have it cut and none of these dire dangers have come to fruition -- including one from the dentist, who told us that she would not be able to use her tongue to properly clean her teeth. At 9, and an sweets addict, she still has no cavities.

Good luck OP !

No but a friend’s son has a late-diagnosed tongue tie and her doctor told her he wouldn’t do anything about it until he went to speech therapy for 6 months and then got diagnosed as speech delayed with reason to believe the delay is caused by the tongue tie. So her doctor is taking the removal of it very seriously. He’s 3.

We delayed during Covid. I wish we hadn't waited. The earlier this is done the easier the procedure is on the child. We did not do much preparation. Told her the night before the procedure that she was going to see the doctor next day.

My DD had her lip ties lasered when she was 3, almost 4. Her younger brother had just had his done (infant) and we realized how prominent hers were, and seemed to be causing tooth enamel loss. She was also a fitful sleeper, woke up a lot, and I read that can be related to tongue/lip tie.. She received nitrous oxide for the procedure and the worst part was her detoxing off of that, which they told us to expect.

The exercises afterward were much harder than with my infant because of her age. But you have to do them! There is one spot where hers reattached a bit because I think I stopped them too soon. The dentist said it’s fine, but I still kick myself about it. We have seen huge improvement in DD’s sleep and teeth since the procedure.
