Listing hobbies/interests on resume

Is there any advantage or disadvantage? I keep getting mixed responses from friends as to whether or not to do this. Thoughts?

I saw an article on exec searches telling you to do this on your linked in profile because it gives people another possibility of "connecting" with you. Though, it depends on your hobbies and interests, I suppose.

HR Bitch here: I am against it. Let your personality come out in your interview by wearing a sports clip on your tie or something.

I think for a very high level job it would be inappropriate. But early to mid-career for more of a worker bee position - I think it's ok but only if you have something distinctive. "Yoga and cooking" - no. But "black belt in taekwando" or "yoga instructor" or "refurbish vintage aston martins" would be ok.

I work in PR and my hobbies are incredibly quirky for my field. I collect coins and do a sport that is uncommon here... think cricket

I work in recruiting and although it wouldn't turn me off, I don't think it adds anything. Unless your hobby directly relates to the job itself--i.e. one of their clients is the National Association of Coin Collectors.

Then again, if you are a golfer, that goes a long way for some positions.
