Friend and I went to a sushi place near work tonight. They have an all you can eat menu; sushi is pretty good but service is usually okay. Not horrible, not great.
We waited 30 minutes for our first round of sushi. Had to flag down another waiter to get another menu, 30 minutes later we still hadn't gotten second round. We both had a time constraint, so we asked for the order to go. Waitress said no. We asked if we could pay for only the rolls we ate. Said no, a little more forcefully. We asked how much longer...two seconds later she throws the plate on the table. We asked for the check and she says not until we're done eating. Asked to speak to a manager, she said no. We didn't leave a tip (and we weren't the only table having trouble here). DH is horrified that we didn't leave a tip, says it's like stealing. We paid the bill, but the service was so horrible I just couldn't. Right or wrong? |
You were 100% correct not to leave a tip. If waiters always received tips for shitty service they would have no incentive to ever provide good service.
Why would you tip them? That would be like rewarding someone for being bad or rude or unprofessional.
I would have insisted to see manager. Would not have accepted no.
Normally I always leave 20% even if the service isn't great. But I would not tip for the service you describe, and depending on how much time and energy I had, it's likely I would refuse to pay the bill until the manager was produced and apologies were made.
There's always yelp.
I wouldn't have left a tip. I think you should post on their FB page and/or Yelp about your experience. Maybe the manager wasn't there and doesn't know what's going on.
First of all, you never have to leave a tip, be it the service is good or bad. Secondly, it seems like you didn't go to an awesome place so please don't expect awesome service. If she refused to get the manager, you find another waiter, and another, until someone gets the manager.
I would have gotten up to leave....that makes a statement.
and i wouldn't pay with a credit card
I would have left a small tip. Something that was so obvious that she'd know you weren't happy. That waitress should be fired.

OP here: There are plenty of reviews on yelp about the horrible service and I just added another. I called and asked to speak to the manager; the woman on the phone kept saying "There's no one with that name here". Either a language barrier or trying to be clever avoiding the problem!
And I paid with my AmEx. That way if they pull any crap adding the tip I can easily dispute it. Thanks for the replies! |
leave one penny tip next time...that makes a statement
This. The hell with the waiter, go up to the host station or, if you have to, to the bar, or even to the kitchen door if it's that bad and ask who is in charge. |
30 minutes is not that long to wait for an order of sushi prepared fresh if they are busy. If you want quicker service, go get grocery store sushi. If it was an all-you-can eat deal, of course they're not going to let you take it to go. You are the one in the wrong here.
