Snack in Montg Cty - first grade?

Anonymous
Is a teacher allowed to have a snack time if she wants to schedule one? It's a long day. Lunch is very chaotic at our school with 750 kids in K-2. Just curious how it works.

We have a snack in grade 3 because the kids have the last lunch period at around 1pm or so. I think it probably helps my kid.

DD's first grade class has a snack time. Everyone brings their own snack (unlike in K where the teacher provided the snack).

My oldest had snack every year of MoCo ES. My middle one had it through 4 th and not get sure about this year yet.

Totally depends on your teacher and school. My child's teacher did not allow them in K last year. Coupled with trying to eat lunch in a crowded and short lunch period, was most unfortunate. If your teacher allows it, and parents organize it, it seems a good idea for kiddos.

Yep. Some of the grades with later lunches may have it, some may not. Some teachers may be allowed to decide for theri own class, other school may have a uniform policy. Some may find funds to provide, others may ask parents to contribute. Ask your kid's teacher about it if you think there should be one.

My MoCo kid only had snack with a 1 o'clock lunch time (3rd grade). There was no actual time allotted but kids were allowed to eat something brought from home if they had it during the morning. Other than that..no snacks.

Best to stop helicoptering and coddling. Don't you think the administrators know what these young ones can handle in that environment?

If they think a snack is necessary, they allow it. Your kid will also get used to the schedule and learn to eat enough in the AM and will eat up their healthy lunch by the time lunch rolls around.

My daughter doesn't seem to eat much lunch so far. She ate her whole lunch in Kidergarten so she said it's just very crazy at lunchtime and she runs out of time. It's chaotic in her cafeteria with over 200 1st graders apparently. It's not helicoptering asking about a snack. They apparently do it at all the private schools in our area.

At the good public schools in Montg County, the classes are huge. The kids may be overall more affluent in our SS school so we get 27 kids instead of 16 or 18 or 20 in our classes which is a huge difference. Our kids' bus picks them up so early that they are not so hungry for breakfast. I think a quick snack is a good idea. I certainly have one at work, sometimes multiple times. It is rather pathetic to call this helicoptering - come on, this is totally different. I'm not demanding to be involved in orchestrating her academic career or meddling with respect to her academic development.

It's just a no brainer that kids don't always perform to their best ability if they are hungry.
