Ate they playing us?

Rental company just sent me an email saying we owe them $80.

We just moved here a month ago and got the first utility bill which comes every 2 months. I figured we payed $80 which was our half since there was a credit of already $350 from the previous tenant.

Now the rental company is telling me to send them the check of $80 so they can pay the pervious tenant.

How do I know they're telling me the truth? I did the math and there's no way we spent $160 utilities being here just one month. Not to mention the previous tenant left an enormous amount of trash behind and we were charged almost $50 to dispose of the extras.

What would you do?

I would talk to the rental company and ask for an itemized list of the utility costs. I don't know where you moved from, but utility costs in this area can be much higher than other areas. You may very well have spent that amount and not realized it with the higher costs - just a thought...without the proof you are actually just guessing that you didn't spend that much. You also won't know the rental company is telling the truth without the proof either.

Sadly, I'm not sure you can do much about the trash left behind and being charged for it. It sucks and the landlord should have taken care of it for you, but you should have called and informed them as soon as you moved in that they need to clean up the place. I would definitely tell them about the trash now, but I'm not sure you'll be able to get a good solution at this point - should have done it in the beginning.

Good luck!

I actually mentioned it in an email with a lot of other stuff and they pretended they didn't see it.

We moved away from DC to a smaller place so I calculated our costs. Ill log on and check the itemized bill thanks for the suggestion.

yes, check the itemized list. My electric bill in the summer alone can run to $100 if we're running the AC. Plus there's the gas bill for the oven and water heater ($20-$40/month) and the water/sewer bill ($55-$60/month.)

Send them the $50 bill for the disposal.
