| This has to be one of the lightest years for school enrollment ever. C'mon Chancellor get to closing some additonal schools. DCPS has to be under 20,000 students. |
| Really? It was kids all over my neighborhood going to their DCPS and there are 4 in my neighborhood. |
| OP are you basing your comments on observing a school? Or are you making grand statements based on hard data? |
really?? , if so, they must be all on the pre-K waitlist of my child's DCPS elementary school, based on how long it is........ |
|
That's right - and the message should be loud and clear:
If DCPS wants any of those kids back, they are going to have to EARN them back... |
Duh.

The first day of school was light and if many are in pre-school then that's not a barometer for the entire school system. As parents accompany their children to pre- school which gives a more of a crowded atmosphere.
What we've only graduated about 2,000 seniors in June...which statistically should have left around 24,000 students eligible to return to school. The mood in the city was like about 18K were attending school. I am just saying the rumbling of principals saying that have a substantial number of no-shows. Well, when the count is taken in October, I will guarantee another round of school closings will be on the docket. |
| My DC's DCPS middle school, which I won't name in this context. 15 in 6th grade home room class, with 5+ no shows. |
| OP, what is your basis. Do you have some facts to back up your claim? |
Wow.....guess there will be more consolidations. |
Great! Now share some of the shuttered facilities with the charters - my childrens' school was overflowing. |
There are a lot more than 24,000 students in DCPS. There were over 45,000 students in DCPS last year. http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/About+DCPS/Who+We+Are/Facts+and+Statistics |
Those kids are likely enrolled somewhere else, AND on the waiting list of a better school. It's not as if they're NOT in school. |
I doubt there will be consolidations, as there are a lot more current 5th graders waiting in the wings for school year 2014/15 than there are current 6th graders in the DC school system due to the post 9/11 baby boom and due to demographic shifts. As a parent of a current 6th grader, I've predicted an excess number of 6th grade spots this year all along. And it's exactly what's playing out. Except for the most in demand schools, public and charter, I'm pretty sure all 6h grade waitlists have cleared by now, all except for Deal, Latin, and Stuart-Hobson. My prediction is that SY2014/15 will be tighter but still more supply than demand. For SY2015/16, you may see all available spaces start to fill, but probably not even then, because at least DCI will be added on the supply side. No shows are a common occurrence throughout the DC school system due to its uniquely open school choice system. 25% is likely above average. My gut would place the average for middle school at about 10%. I really wish data like this were made public. |
What the hell is the post 9/11 baby boom? Who are these people who thought: the world is fire! Let's make some babies to burn!
