Hi -- My 5 year old son needs to have trigger thumb outpatient surgery on both thumbs. Has anyone's child had to have this surgery? We've seen two different pediatric hand surgeons -- Dr Robert Wilson at Children's Hospital and Dr. Delahay at Georgetown Hospital. Would love to hear about other people's experiences with this surgery and recovery. Thank you!
My son had the surgery, and it didn't help. But that may be because he really didn't have much physical therapy afterwards. We're going to see another orthopedist about it.
Thanks for your response -- you are the first person that I know whose child had this procedure. Would you mind telling me which surgeon you went to and what the recovery was like? You can email me directly at ellenschupper@hotmail.com if that would be easier. Also, how old was your son at the time of the surgery? THANK YOU!
My son was about 5 or 6 when he had the surgery. I don't want to name the doctor, because he's a friend, and I'm not sure the fault was with the surgery, but maybe with the fact that we didn't do any follow-up PT. The surgery itself was pretty quick (we did it at Children's) but they put him under since he has to be very still during the operation. He was home the same day, and recovery was uneventful. I must say, we've probably procrastinated about getting another opinion because my son functions quite well with it, although we worry it might affect the way he holds a pencil.
I'm the PP. We know another family whose son had the surgery and it seemed to go very well for him.
Dr. Emily Hattwick is also a pediatric hand surgeon at Children's. She sees patients out at their Fairfax clinic on Arlington Boulevard. She is wonderful with kids! She operates at the downtown Children's hospital with pediatric anesthesiologists, so we were comforted by that. You do have to do physical therapy afterwards. You can't really blame a "failed" surgery on the surgeon if you haven't followed the plan for after surgery!
That's the problem; there was no plan. And the surgeon was from Children's as well.
