s/o On the Lena Dunham thread and the general prevailing notion that women must be attractive...

Above all else, a woman must be physically attractive or try hard to achieve it. There has to be evidence that she is trying.

Do you agree with the above statement? Is it imperative that women be aesthetically pleasing to the eye? Is it SO important to be attractive b/c despite how far we've come, that's how her worth is measured? It seems that not only men but most women agree with this. So many women on DCUM seem personally offended when other women don't meet their ideals of beauty. And when the other women don't seem to care, it causes even more rage. What's up with this? Explain.

I don't agree with it personally, however, I know it's pretty much a societal fact.

No, I don't agree with that statement. I do agree with your assessment - that some people truly loathe women for being unattractive, and even moreso when the woman doesn't care whether she is considered attractive or not. Kind of interesting on a sociological level, but mainly just depressing.

I don't loathe unattractive women as long as they don't go flaunting about like they're super attractive. Same goes for ugly men. Know your role.

No, I do not agree with that statement. However, Lena Dunham is a televisions star who appears nude in front of millions of viewers, not an "ordinary" person. Different standard for her, therefore the criticism is not the same.

But what is flaunting? Being confident, or happy, or sexual? If someone is fat or ugly are they supposed to circumscribe their life so that they're not seen as stepping out of their "role"?

Ha, OK. Fair enough, though I think it's totally fine to have a non-supermodel showing her breasts in a sex scene just the same as everyone else. But for your average woman, what would you consider flaunting?

I feel this acutely, as a woman with slightly above-average "natural looks" who doesn't primp at all. It's not my imagination: I have fielded pointed hostile comments from relatives, an ex husband, and coworkers over the decades who clearly state that I should be making more effort to appear pretty, hot or enticing.

(However, I am clean, I don't smell, I clip my toenails, I get dental care and occasional hair trims. I keep myself at average weight Because I do care about *health*. I am not depressed and I have not "let myself go" in the way that people describe when discussing a mentally ill person descending into despair. )

I believe it. When some people see an otherwise attractive woman not doing Every Thing Possible to enhance her looks, they take it as a personal affront. Like the "friends" who nominate people for makeover shows.

As someone who does not like the show, I will defend Lena Dunham here. I am proud of her for being confident enough to do this.

Also, read this: http://www.xojane.com/sex/i-look-a-lot-like-lena-dunham-and-ive-banged-super-hot-dudes It's an excellent defense of Lena Dunham.
