This seems to have been posted several years ago and received snarky replies. Not looking for that. My DC is starting in the middle school and looking for constructive advice. We are from the burbs and new to the whole DC scene. Thank you in advance.

Since you seem to know about the "I wish I had known X" then that tells me you are familiar with DCUM and know how to search for Sidwell threads. That should be an invaluable start to the information you seek.

I would start by reading the 10 pages of BTS info you received via email and attending the Parent events week.

I wish I had known that the school does an "abysmal"* job at math placement. Be sure your child is in the right class and do not be hesitant to speak to his/her teacher if you have any concerns.
