How common are credit checks for applicants?

Obviously, they are done for federal positions or positions requiring a security clearance. But for typical jobs? I had a friend that had to undergo a credit check for a minor position in a non-profit and I was in shock.

I think they are stupid since if someone is in debt, getting a job is what they should be doing to solve the problem, right? By denying someone a job just because they owe a creditor or two money just doesn't make any sense or cents to me.

But I notice many jobs are requiring this more and more.

Unless you're dealing with money, what's the point?

Banks and other financial services companies are very likely to do a background check. HUD requires firms who do work for them also require a background check on employees. Many stories last year about people being let go as a result of some issue loooong ago that turned up

Tangentially, does getting unemployment show up on background or credit checks?
